The dies are a very old set of C-H that I picked up used at a gunshow about 15 years ago . I have no idea if they are still made , or even made for both rifles
any more . They do say M-71 Mauser on them . I am Glad to help and would not think too many people have done this type of load testing . Hunting with a M-71
and jacketed bullets at high velocity can not be too popular ?

What brand of dies are you using that are made specically for the Model 71? Are they still available?

And thanks to all for the good info and help that has been posted so far; even more will be appreciated.

Blitz99,

Thanks for responding to this question. I have a nice little Kar.71 that was sporterized by a German guild smith a long time ago that I would like to take a
deer with. Your information will get met started.

I have put alot of time in hunting load development for a M-71 short rifle . My bore is .433 land -.454 groove . Here is what I have found . First I do happen
to have a set of dies made for the M-71 , not the 71/84 , and they are the correct size . You can use 45 colt dies to neck , expand and seat . RCBS are the
best as they have more of an adjustment range in them . I reset my rifles headspace when I started this and it has not increased with over 400 rounds fired . I
am using jacketed bullets and a "hot" load of smokeless . I have also checked my bore and it has shown no wear after 400 rounds . My best load has
been the Hornady .452 dia 300 grain xtp bullet with 36.2 of I-4198 for 1600 fps in 25 inches of barrel . A lighter load of 32.6 also does ok at 1500 fps . 39.6
of Reloader 7 has done 1650 fps . In load development I have fired the 300 grain bullet as fast as 2000 fps with no pressure signs , so I feel the 1500 to 1600
fps should be fine , 1600 fps is what I...

I've used 777 in a 50/70 trapdoor and found to be a fine substitute for BP. As with all BP cartridges make sure you pack it leaving no air gaps (I use a
lubed overpowder wad). I don't believe 777 is non-corrosive, just that it cleans up with water. I make it a point of cleaning up as though I had shot BP
and use really hot water. Once the firearm heats up the water evaporates quickly makeing it much easier to clean. As always your mileage may vary.
I've no experience with .450 dies or projectiles so I cant help you there.. Best of luck with that Mauser!
1. I don't have, or know, of any molds that throw an approximate .450 rifle bullet. I have an old Lee Minie Ball mold that casts at that diameter and about
295 grains. I thought of shortening the core pin a little to get the weight up to around 350 grains; and still leave a small hollow base to obturate and
possibly also hold a little lube? Any thoughts on this? Any other suggestions for a bullet to use?
2. All reloading dies and info I find suggest that they resize the neck to fit the .446 or.439 bullets...
