On Dad's side of the family, I'm German Jewish (actually, we've always called ourselves "Prussian Jewish"), Hungarian Jewish, English Jewish (they came from the Netherlands, but I believe it was during the time of Cromwell that they emigrated...), and Afrikanerjoode (also came from the Netherlands, but did so long before the existence of the Boer Republics and I believe right before the English took control of the Cape) with some possible (I would go so far as to say probable) Polish Jewish mixed in with the ethnically-different Prussian Jews. My Dad is a religious Conservative Jew. I am a Roman Catholic, but was Bar Mitzvah'ed before I was Confirmed and cannot stress my respect for the Jewish faith nor my own cultural ties to it. I too lost a number of relatives in the Holocaust, although granted, they were not as close as yours.

My parents were both Holocaust survivors from Auschwitz.

My grandparents went up the chimney at Auschwitz, as well as most of my aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

They were murdered 20 years before I was born.

I even had a half sister, my father's infant daughter who was murdered there.

I'm sure that this was done by some Jew hater/ Christ hater Holocaust denier.

For what it's worth, these guys don't sound like amateurs. Think of this: why would a prankster try and unscrew one side of the sign? To me, that indicates that they wanted to take the sign, not just rip it down. That indicates they wanted to keep the sign intact. You are correct. I made a mistake reading the censuses. It would seem that someone translated "congregations" into "members," and then set it next to "denomination." I checked...someone cut and pasted the same thing onto Wikipedia, too. For those wondering, I've rechecked the Muslim population as well, which is estimated around 31,000.

It seems to fluctuate between 1,200 and 1,300, but it's remained pretty steady around there since the end of WWII. I would say the most likely culprit would be a skinhead or a Tawana Brawley-type lunatic, although I find the latter rather unlikely. I would point out, however, that there is a third possibility: there are also roughly 5,500 Muslims in Poland. Although I will say that's somewhat misleading; a lot of them are Tatars, who have at least traditionally been one of the handful of Muslim groups not only not hostile but openly sympathetic to Jewish persecution (the Polish Tatars suffered pretty badly at the hands of the government in Russian-controlled Poland, especially; a few even fell victim to the same Pogroms and identified with the Polish Jews). But a recent wave of immigration from Pakistan and the Balkan states would appear to have changed that.
