Anyway, right now I have a M24/47 that I bought from my local sporting goods store (Big 5), pretty good condition, but I'm thinking about going to a gun show and seeing if I can trade it in for something else in a better condition since I have had some issues with it. Now, I've never been to a gu show before, this is the one I'm thinking of going to: http://www.glendalegunshow.com/glendale_info.php at gun shows, would it be legal for me to exchange a gun as a credit for another one? Is doing this common or likely or am I just not thinking straight? btw, has anyone been to this particular show? If so, any idea about what their selection is of military surplus rifles? Since I'm kind of new to all of this, could someone direct me to a post about what to look for when I'm trying to choose a rifle? Ya, I'm a big newby to all of this, thanks a lot.

Posts: 19 (08/03/08 12:12 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Basically some of the rounds get stovepiped, some people recommended that I change ammo since I have only used modern commercial grade, I haven't been able to get any surplus, I might get some if I don't end up trading my m24, but can anyone help me with my other questions?

Every single M24/47 that I have seen, including the five in my collection, were coated with grease or cosmoline in the magazine and follower area, and the only way to get it all out was to completely take down the rifle. You might check the follower spring also to make sure it is up to snuff and installed correctly. Curt

I think what some of us may be thinking in trying to answer your question, is trying to put ourselves in your head so to speak. What are your expectations and what do you want to use a new/different milsurp for? I imagine basic taget shooting or plinking. There are lots of possibilities out there in the milsurp world, it really depends on what you want to use it for, and if a certain weapon "speaks" or "calls" to you or not. Frankly, the 24/47 is a great choice already. They have been refurbbed by the Yugos with new barrels and stored until imported to the US. I think most will agree that they are very accurate as is. The swiss k31 is another great choice and fairly reasonably priced right now. Near match grade surplus ammo is readily attainable too. There is another thread here that lists a link to a vintage milsurp CMP match that has swiss K31s and swedish mausers dominating the field. In Florida, you can sell or trade your milsurp at a show if you can find someone interested enough to do it. I think it is safe to say that if people have been doing their homework (like cruising this site) they will see 24/47s are a good grab right now, but that doesn't necesarily mean you can walk up to a dealers table and wheel and deal. They get them for less than regular joe can get them for as it is. Then you might consider they still have to do paperwork, and is it worth their trouble. We have some dealers here that are great. Then we also have some that if I were to approach them trying to trade a $130+ or - yugo mauser for something else, they would look at me like I was smoking crack. Many have a "don't bother me with that stuff" attitude. I guess the bottom line is go for it. It doesnt hurt giving it a shot, unless CA has laws against it. Good luck!

Posts: 21 (08/03/08 05:49 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	to Parris, Thanks a lot for your input, in fact I just found out that CA laws do permit me to sell weapons or exchange them legally without licensing mumbo jumbo. Also, the Swiss K31 was exactly what I was looking for as a replacement, not that I don't like my M24 but I thought owning a K31 would be a owning a very unique and high quality piece. I just hope that I can find one for a good price nowadays.

I think I can safely say that practically everyone here owns at least several. Personally, I have three K-31's and five M24/47's along with nearly a hundred other fine specimens. One more thing that may be causing your stovepiping. When working the action, make sure you do it snappy like. Don't baby it. The bolt has to come back and hit the stop with enough force to eject the fired cartridge, and if it is babied, the cartridge will not be thrown clear of the rifle, causing the stovepiping. That is how these rifles were designed to be fired. You ain't going to hurt it any by slamming the bolt. Curt

Right now, you have about the best buy there is readily available in Mausers these day s- Yyour 24/47. The best thing I can suggest is that you cruise the different forums and see what's going and what might interest you. Mosin Nagant come in a variety of variations. Your basic 91/30 long rifle can be rough as a cob and as plain as the peasants, (et al) that drove the Nazis out of their country country with it, it is inexpensive, easily maintained and fun to shoot. If you want a short gun the Mosin M44 is still readily available and owns it's share of history too. Then there's nothing like the fireball out of those things come dusk. Loads of fun. If you're thnking of a more 'serious' collectable, then there's a lot to choose from. I'd avoid "original" German K98k's unless you do your home work first. Too many fakes out there. But you can get a Russian Capture for a lot less and other than a thick layer of shellac and being a mismatched parts gun, it's the same thing.
