Soon I'm gonna sell a rifle and order the two new compilations that they've done of some of Sergeant Rock's exploits.....they look to be great books. Maybe I'll just drop a hint to the wife...my birthday's coming up.....

I don't know what sparked your interest in milsurps, but "Combat!" and "Rat Patrol" along with "The Gallant Men" sure did a
number on me. At the same time, my buddy and I were trading back and forth issues of Sergeant Rock of Easy Company, The Haunted Tank, Tales of the Pacific, and
many more. Anybody remember them?

I member those. Spent a lot of winter nights reading them while Mom drug us to the laundrymat in town. We had a wringer washer and a solar clothes dryer. The
washer was in the wash house and wasn't heated so during the winter she did laundry in town. I can only imagine how many clothes three boys could get
dirty. I would spring for Sgt Rock or Tales of the Pac or Haunted tank comic books. Hard to imagine the kids of today reading that stuff.

Oh man, I remember all those comics. "SGT Rock" and "Nick Fury and The Howling Commandoes" were my favorites. Remember "Enemy
Ace?" That was a good one even if short lived.
Wish I hadn't given my comics to my little sister. She sold them for a song. What I had them now. Sigh. Regards, Eric

Yep, I remember Sgt. Rock well. I remember when he got a battlefield commission to a shave tail and his outfit did not like it, and neither did he. So he did
something to get busted back to sergeant. I also remember the time his squad was passing thru a town and there was a Kraut machine gun nest hidden in a pile of
garbage. He walked by it, and as the machine gunners were waiting for the squad to catch up so they could get them all, Sgt. Rock kneeled down like to tie his
boot laces. But he went for a grenade and lobbed it at the machine gun nest and took it out. I always wished I had a throwing arm like that!
Then there was Captain Johnny White Cloud who single handidly took on the entire Luftwaffe and always retured with a couple victories. All because of a cloud formation that looked like an Indian chief who led him on his missions in the Mustang. Then also there was the tank crew who had a Stewart tank and took on the Panzers with the small 37mm gun and always won, including shooting thru a store window once to knock out a Tiger. And there were some comic books that were about a WW1 pilot that went thru some sort of time warp and found himself in a dogfight with a Messerschmidt and he managed to out maneuver it and shoot down the Kraut. Then he went thru another time warp and found him self in a dogfight with a Mig in Korea and he was flying straight up when he shot down the Mig. Can't remember the name of that comic book, however. But yeah, I read them all. Most of them cost 12 cents at the time and I was always borrowing the money from my folks to walk to the Greyhound Bus depot who had the best comic book selection in town to buy the latest. Sadly, they all got thrown out as I got older. I watched Combat every week. It was somewhat neat, as one week Sgt. Saunders would be the leading actor, and the next week it was Lt. Handley. I remember the time Saunders squad had a replacement who was a farm boy. They were crossing this field with a few trees in it and the farm boy pointed out the snipers hidden in the trees, as the camoflage did not look natural. So Sgt. Saunders sprayed the tree with his Thompson and the Kraut fell out of it. Never cared much for Rat Patrol, for some reason, so I did not watch it very often. Probably something else was on a different channel at the time it came on that got watched. I don't remember The Gallant Men, so can't comment there. But my other favorite TV show was 12 O'Clock High. Never missed an episode of that show, being that it was on late Friday nights here. Curt |

Taking a quick break from battening down.
Yeah, those comics and shows had as much as anything to do with my joining up. Sgt. Fury was a bit much for me but I read them anyway. Don't forget the precursor to some of those, DC's OAAW Our Army At War. Not about any one set of characters though many were introduced there. Most of those were .10. I still have a few of these in a box but they're the later .25 books. I had them all boxed in the attic when there was a fire. Water damage got the other boxes. Sigghhh. I remember those. M1 talker, that farmboy was Beau Bridges ( I think). He was an arborist. the one i remember was when they had to destroy a cache of priceless
statues to blow up a pillbox. my dad was a WW2 vet in Italy & would not miss an episode, but some he found disturbing. This was the only time he would talk
of his experiences & I hung on every word. I know he carried a 1928 Thompson, & commented about the krauts using wood bullets, & that they could
use our ammo if they needed to, but if we used thiers, it would blow up your gun.I guess you could crush a 06 in a 8mm chamber.

John Moses wrote:I happen to have that one on tape. The title is "Heritage." The 'guest star' was Charles Bronson. He was a sculptor who mostly had worked on headstones but aspired to greater things. He studied the greats and had extensive knowledge of rock and stone formation, hence his inclusion to the mission. The Germans had a block house cut into a rocky out cropping that overlooked a valley the Allies needed to use to move up in pursuit of the Germans but the artillery spotting from this block house kept them from getting anything through. Bombers couldn't take it out either. Well, Saunders & co. discovered there were caverns underneath the block house filled with priceless pieces of artwork. The block house couldn't be brought down without destroying and burying them. Bronson wasn't going to do it. Finally he did, sealing himself in with the artwork. The End. Da tum da....

I still have a drawer full of Ghost Tank, Sgt. Rock, and some others. I will dig them out this weekend and try post some pics. Mom didnt pitch anything. She
gave me a big tote last time I was home full of old webgear I had been given as a kid. All WW2 or Korean vintage. Web belts, slings, helmet ect. I can remember
going to the surplus store with my dad buying some of it. One webbelt was my dad's when he was in the guards in the 60's. And his lenstatic (sp)
compass. Bless her heart. :-)

The one I remember was DC's "Star Spangled War Stories" which featured GIs fighting dinosaurs. I confess I rarely
read those comics, I was more into superheroes DC style. Also I am from a slightly older (born 1949) cohort, those comics were a little after my time , I recall various playsets I had of GI figures. |

I was just a gleam in my daddy's eye when Combat originally aired but, he let me stay up late on a school night and we watched the reruns . I thought
it was a good series.. Didnt Rob Morrow do a war related original twilight zone episode ??
