possible virus threat |

Hello, Yesterday afternoon when I was looking at the pictures and movies of the T-34 recovery in the thread below, my computer was suddenly infected by a
virus. It was the "downloader.misleadapp" virus with the file name of "mjkspc.dll". It imbedded in "C:documentsandsettings\"my
name"\applicationdata\google" folder, probably because I use Firefox as my browser. Norton could neither remove or quarantine it, but after some
work I was able to locate it and delete the file manually (or hope I did). This may have been a coincidence and I do not want to cast any aspersions on the
poster or the links, but perhaps someone a bit more savvy than I am should check this out.

This seems to be common to Yuku sites when you aren't logged in. I just recently wiped and reloaded all three of our computers, one Macbook, a Windows pc
and an Intel machine running Linux, all because of these threats. Log in before you browse and you shouldn't have any troubles with infected pop-up ads.
Anyone here who wants a great free Windows anti-virus should google "AVG Free" Go to their site an follow the links to the free download. They will try to convince you to buy the premium software but the free version is so good, IMO most won't need it. Look at the entire pages as the come up and choose to download directly from their site, it's best, again, IMO. For free anti-virus for your OS X Mac, google "ClamX AV" and make a donation if you like it, after using it for awhile. Set it up in its' preferences to watch your download, system, application, document and library files. You can also right click/menu on a file/item to scan an item. Enable "Sentry" and configure it to start when the computer is started up. For Linux, "ClamX' is a good start and IIRC there are a few options here. This is also "Donation-ware". Anyone running "Parallels" software or similar, should install and use within each OS partition an antivirus because these can be a way in for malicious software. Lastly, I suggest you wipe and reload your OS if at all in doubt or suspect the slow down is because of compromised software, making an antivirus download/install the 2ed item to take care of, before any updates or other software, and if on Windows, create a "Restore Point" by hitting "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories" choose "System Tools" and "System Restore" Hope this helps, Eli

I just had an old desktop here at home ruined by the "Anti Virus 2009" virus, it seems widespread and will display a pop up window posing as a
Windows alert to delete a threat, so if you unknowingly click on "OK" or X out of it it will activate the virus.
I also have it on my laptop, I have to run the internet in "safe mode" and I haven't had any problems, but I also have more limited use of my computer now. The guy at Staples said they had about 20 laptops there waiting to be "cleaned" of this virus, and it takes a long time to get it out of a computer. |

Stan, my experience with these 'windows alert' viruses is that they download whatever you select, prevent you from closing a browser in a normal
fashion and the only way to close the browser is to force quit the device. Of course by then, all sorts of changes may have been made to your register by
software already downloaded . I've only be satisfied that my machines are 'safe' by wiping out everything, starting fresh and keeping good,
antivirus checked backups on important files.
One positive note about all this, it's likely to be keeping more than a few tech guys gainfully employed cleaning infected machines during this recession.

Ditto on AVG anti virus. I've had the full blow Macaffe and Nortons anti virus programs and still had my PCs get zapped. Been running the free AVG for 3+
years and haven't had any problems. And it sure finds and removes things on your AV scans.

Oh yeah, and NEVER use Cyber Defender!! Never!
I paid $299 for the "deluxe" package and it did nothing, spent hours and hours on the phone talking to people somewhere in India and they fixed the computer for like, an hour then the virus came back out of nowhere. I had to call the BBB to get a refund out of Cyber Defender, they (C D) refused to refund my money even though they offer an "unconditional guarantee" that if they can't fix your machine they will refund your money, then they fight you tooth and nail when you call them on it. |

avg doesnt do spyware as far as I know. get adaware or spybot search and destroy (both free) for spyware. +1 for AVG. Good program. You can go to Norton or
Mccaffee's website to get virus and spyware removal programs (like the windows antivirus 2009 virus)....

Dou 44, did you use AVG 8 anti-virus ? This is the newest and includes anti-spyware where the older AVG versions did not. I used the stand-alone AVG
anti-spyware and it was a good enough product but it was system heavy.
Cheers

I do IT stuff for a living and I can tell you that nothing will fix everything. I have had very good luck with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware software to
remove lots of things. I run McAfee's Enterprise edition at work and it doesn't catch lots of things. Good Luck and Careful clicking!

You may be able to fix your laptop using the restore option in Windows. Essentially, it a big "do over" which will return your laptop to where it
was before you were infected. At this point, you don't have alot to lose. If restore doesn't work after going back to different restore points, you
can use the CDs that came with your laptop to bring it back to where it was when you you bought it. Good luck.
