I need some help with peep sights |
Lead | |
|
I was at a gun show and I saw a yugo m48 with a peep sight mounted about where the cocking piece is, the rear sight was taken off and the peep sight lines up
with the original front sight, I wanted to know if anyone had an idea of what the name of the sight might be (I think it began with a G). sorry I can't
give you any more information , I might be a universal sight so its probably hard to find
. or if anyone know of a sight that is like this one

Not sure I follow you. Do you mean mounted where the yellow 'X' is? If so, I've never seen such a critter and would suspect the work of Bubba.
But a lot of these rifles were modified during the civil wars over there. No telling really.
There is a commercial peep sight for Mausers called the Mojo. But it mounts in place of the rear sight ladder which can be reinstalled anytime to restore the weapon to military original condition. Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers |

Sorry but that sight would require permanent alteration of an original weapon and we do not discuss such alterations here. It's in our rules.

You can put one of these on without permanently altering the gun. Good site.

well thanks I'm not really sure what to do, maybe I'll think of something when I get another mauser (s) . tell me what you guys think of a reflex scope
. feel free to close the topic down

No need so far to shut it down. No rules against discussing the merits of a particular scope. Just stay away from 'how to modify the rifle...'
discussion.
The aperture sight Scooter suggested is an okay topic. For that you remove the rear sight ladder that's held by a pin, and mount it on the rear sight base. It can be removed and the rear sight ladder reinstalled anytime, fully restoring the arm to original military issue condition and that's okay. The main drawback to this sight is that you don't get the close eye relief that best serves an aperature sight. Still an improvement over 'V' notch and barley corn. There are scope mounts that attach the same way too. It's just things that permanently alter the weapon we oppose, drilling, tapping, dovetailing, that sort of thing. well my problem is that a new barrel has been installed on the m48a and the sights had to be adjusted , which is kind of hard to do so I am trying to explore
other options, like a red dot scope or something to replace the old sights
. I can get replacement sights but I would like to try somethin new , like this http://www.murphysarms.com/images/DSC00017.JPG or a reflex scope mounted in the same way . what do you guys think

If I'm seeing that right, that scope mounts on the rear sight base and we can deal with that here. Unfortunately, I am not a scope man myself and can not
tell you more on it. Hopefully, somebody more knowledgeable will along soon with more info.
If we don't get you an answer in a day or too, what I can do is to move this topic over to the Parallax view. This sight configuration is typical to most mausers so you'll get more lookers on that forum. If you want me to just go ahead and move it before then, say so and I'll do it.

OK> You got it.
To readers on the P' View... I think we've convinced the fellow not to sporterize, but he has some scope questions he's not getting answered on the Yugo Mauser forum. Since the scope mounts are fairly typical to all mausers, I figure somebody here can surely answer him. Please?

I have seen pictures of European or British sporting rifles where a peep was mounted on the cocking shroud. Probably good enough for a quick shooting hunting
rifle, but certainly not a target mount as the sight moves with the bolt.

I've got a B-square scout scope mount that I had on my Israeli 98. It's fitted with a cheap 4 power pistol scope. I had problems with the rings that
came with the mount so I replaced them with a pair of Weavers. I also stripped the thread in the base where the two screws go in through the rear sight base
(the base is aluminium and it didn't take much force to remove the thread), but I've got a single bolt that goes right through now. Apart from that
it's good. It didn't make a difference to the accuracy but it did make it quicker to line up a shot. (I originally bought it to try and see how
accurate my rifle was. Its amazing how the horrible V sights and my aging eyes still seem to line everthing up okay.)

the front sight is cracked on the sleeve so I would need to get a new one , plus it would be a hassle to line up and solder the front sight on. by the way nice

Actually lining up the new front sight sleeve/ring shouldn't be too much hassle - there is a locating screw under the front sight blade to help. Just
reheat if the first attempt isn't quite right.
I'm glad you like my rifle - it's the best looking one of my small collection, warts (at least stock dents) and all. It was my first milsurp (in a long time) and I wanted an Israeli to shoot competition with (had dies etc in 308). This particular rifle was looked at and rejected by a few guys at my club (as I found out in due course) because the barrel was slightly pitted - still shoots good though and timber to metalwork fir is tight. Their loss - the Israelis are hard to find over here now and the price is almost double what I paid when you do find one (they are usually in the same condition too - really good ones are abour three times the price+).
