Has anyone have any info on SOG's M-1 Carbines? I want to buy one and am trying to decide on theirs or CMP's. SOG is close to my house so it would be more convenient. Are CMP's import marked, since they were U.S. property? Thanks EXSFDOC

CMP's are not import marked. You need an FFL or C&R to buy from SOG

That said, I agree with HoosierDaddy that the CMP is still the way to go. If you live in the Cincinnatti area, why not make the 3 hour drive to Camp Perry in Port Clinton OH, and pick one out at the CMP-North Store? CMP carbines are NOT import-marked, and looking through the hundred or so on the rack has a value in and of itself that is hard to measure. I-75-North to Findlay, get off on state-road 12, follow it north to state-road 53, follow it north to state-road 2, make a left on state-road 2, and Camp Perry is about 2 miles from the hwy2-hwy53 junction. -Bean

Is the throat erosion below 3 something to stay away from? Will there be that much difference between above 3 and below 3? I'm not going to be shooting in competition, just having fun with it. Thanks. |

Zero is good the higher the number the worse the wear.

Muzzle erosion affects accuracy much more than Throat Erosion. Look for a muzzle under 3.0, and don't worry about the throat unless it is over 6.0.

CMP can never seem to get enough of em. Can"t help but wonder that there is a sizeable catch of carbines in europe. Seen them used by airport police in
Stockholm,Sweden as well as used by range cadre in Hohenfels,Wildflecken,Baumholder,etc.Germany.{ By range cadre I mean Polish Labor Force. They took care of
the target ranges and guarded the ammo stores. They wore US Army uniforms, but were under the control of the germans}M1 carbines were in use as late as 1984,when
I left europe.Knowing the germans, they packed them away in a warehouse somewhere.I'am sure that a large amount of m1 rifles,carbines,45"s,and
BAR"s are being held by the french. Will they ever see the light of day again, remains to be seen.

I've seen military patrols in the airport in Mexico City carrying M1-Carbines as well. We probably won't get those back...
Also, previous correction: As far as Carbines go, I don't think that there are any readily available gages to check Throat Erosion. Throat Erosion applies to the M1-Garand, but not commonly to the Carbine. On a Carbine, look for a muzzle of 3.0 or less, which is what the CMP classifies as "Service Grade". -Bean

SOG will not sell to the public. You must have a FFL, either 01 or 03. They will not do the quick check with ATF.

Most of those Carbines you gents are seeing were sold to those countries under the MAP program. So unless they sell them to groups like Century they will never
be returned.

Well, you guys were right. I made the trip up to CMP and picked out a very nice Inland service grade carbine. The muzzle erosion showed 0 on the gauge. The
barrel looks brand new ( Inland barrel, 6-44). A lot of the parts look new, but I'm sure it has been reworked. The stock is walnut and it and the hand
gaurd show that tiger stripe. I will post picks as soon as I can tke some. Thanks for the encouragement to go to CMP.
