Posts: 1016 (02/07/09 01:18 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Recently unearthed four "war expedient" slings I picked up from Layne many years ago http://www.tngunparts.com/ , along with some standard web slings I've kept boxed up, in the interest of matching more appropriate slings to my various Mosins. The first expedient sling responded well to my favorite leather treatment and a good cleaning of the web material, I'm wanting to try it on my T-53. Question 1: I can't find a picture anywhere (maybe I'm not searching right...) showing the correct way to attach the leather buckles onto the end straps. Can anybody help here? Question 2: Some of my web slings are slopped with cosmo and/or green paint from sloppily dressed-up buckles, any tips on getting them clean without discoloring the web material? Thanks!

Posts: 3465 (02/07/09 01:45 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Leather on expedient slings is often very light colored (deer, pig, or reindeer?) and I have found nothing that softens it that doesn't darken it appreciatively. Even Jergens lotion which I have used from time to time on the advise of a museum curator does darken them a bit. Saddle Soap will clean nicely but leaves things hard and brittle so that is not an alternative. I have used a soft nylon brush with waterless hand cleaner and then just rubbed things dry and never rinsed with water with decent results but I would want to rinse with water if it were dirty enough to warrant and that would be a dry and brittle result I am afraid. Any kind of oils darken things a bit that I know of and it would just be a matter of whether that would be acceptable to you. I believe there are pictures of expedient slings installed in Mosin.net in certain pictures for certain models. Maybe that will help there. Not the best of answers but the best I know. Bill

I use Skidmore's Leather Creme http://www.skidmores.com/proddetail.asp?prod=lc on my leather stuff, works great even on old dirty milsurp stuff and really doesn't discolor anything. I'll soak web stuff in Clorox Oxygen Action which does a good job lifting out the crud. It will dry the heck out of leather though so I'm careful. Guess I'll keep looking for the attachment arrangement on the slings. Thanks!

I have totally ruined too many bayonet frogs, scabbards and slings by trying to use diluted bleach in the past. All I wanted to do was to soften them up and maybe make them a bit more spiffy, but every time I tried, it was a total disaster and I would up throwing the stuff away. Curt

Posts: 1018 (02/08/09 10:48 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks Curt, the Oxygen Action stuff is chlorine free and by being careful I meant that I only clean the web material and try to stay away from the leather. So far I've never seen it discolor anything. I did try it on the filthiest of the expedient slings when I first bought them, learned then that it cleans really well but stiffens the leather. Wish I could get the paint stains off... The Skidmore's rocks on the leather parts.

Posts: 1544 (02/17/09 08:02 AM) Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remove the leather sling stops (buckles)....from the sling. Pass the long leather strap through the buttstock slot from the left side of the rifle to the right. Pass the strap through both slots of the sling stop and then pass it back through the buttstock slot. Make adjustments as needed to make the strap holes lone up properly and tie with the thong. Straighten the strap out (no twists) and repeat on the front of the rifle. It can be difficult on some rifles (and in some cases impossible) to pass the strap back through the slots on the rifle due to the thickness of the leather/thinness of the slots. When installed properly, the rifle will ride on your back (with the bolt handle turned away from your back), providing very comfortable carry (except for that 1" strap digging into your shoulder!)
