A Free Type 99 for us |

My wife just received her C&R license last weekend and this is her first gun acquired with it. This was given to her today by a really cool older
gentleman who stated that his kids and grandkids would do nothing good with it and wouldn't appreciate it after he's gone, so he ups and gives it to
her for the start of her part of our collection. It is a vet bringback Nagoya 2nd series Type 99 with a matching Nagoya bayonet. As you see below the mum is
perfect as are all the other markings.

when she arrived home with it this morning, he gave it to her at her Dr.s visit, I nearly dropped my jaw on the floor when she unwrapped it from the blanket he
sent it in. he just mentioned he had some old rifles and he'd bring us one and if we liked it we could get the rest of his collection, I can't wait til
sunday to see what else he has.

kripp, I'd settle for just a 'smidge of your luck here. It IS a relly nice rifle, battle scars and all.
The Type 38 looks good too. Good job. Yea, I too would like to see/hear what other treasures your good luck has garnered. Eric

Man krippp, talk about a homerun! Great lookin piece and how fortunate can it get. Sounds like a wise old fella that realizes his family has no appreciation of
his collection, and sees to it that the stuff is properly cared for and appreciated. You guys are truely blessed.
How's that good lookin Pup doin?

One other thing, around what year was a 2nd series like this manufactured and is it possible for it to not have come with the sight wings and monopod?

Glad the dog is doing well.
You might try the links posted by petersalt concerning Japanese weapons references that are found at the top of this forum. Also GunBoards is a good source for discussion and questions. http://forums.gunboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51 I am of little help as I know very little about Japanese weapons. Good luck.

Kripp,
McCollum's "Japanese Rifles of WW II" doesn't give a year of production for the Type 99, but it does say that the series 2 was manufactured with the anti-aircraft wings and the monopod. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it appears that there is a small dent in the forearm from contact with the monopod. This might indicate that it was removed from the rifle as soon as "Joe" got it issued to him or shortly thereafter. Eric
