I found it! I've been telling you all for years I had this thing but couldn't remember where. It was in my old Civil War renactor's tin cup in Mom's old cedar chest. (Nowhere near where I thought it was.
)
Anyhow, Dad found this thing in Burma. I guess he found the fellow who threw it too because he was able to find the cap , striker and spring as well. He could find the pin however. What you see in the pics is just cut from a paper clip.
For those not familiar with these, the striker was not spring loaded like ours nor pull fused like some others. The soldier pulled the pin then had to strike the end on something hard, his helmet or rifle stock in most cases. You can see how the cap is dented to one side from being whacked. Maybe that's why it didn't go off, the fellow didn't get a square hit on it. But the stand off spring is non too stout.
As to how it got disarmed, dad knelt down and braced it against his legs and held it tight with both hands (getting the picture here?
) while a buddy no brighter screwed the fuse out with a pair of pliers!
I am darned lucky to be here!
And to ad a little spice, the papers on it!
