Posts: 316 (03/06/09 10:33 AM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Considering purchasing a handgun (from a coworker) and just looking this is expensive ammo for casual shooting. $455 for 1000 rounds! Anyone have some info on this in a US military load? Is this available possibly at gunshows? I don't find any surplus listed on the web, maybe too soon to be released for surplus. I don't see any ball/fmj loadings and it looks like handloading is the way to save with this ammunition. Just looking for a cost per round in general from some one if possible. Thanks. Posts: 6586 (03/06/09 11:46 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't think the military ever adopted a 10mm cartridge so don't go expecting to find any surplus ammo in that caliber. That is the price you pay when you buy a caliber that is not that common, the ammunition ends up costing an arm and a leg for it, WHEN you can even find it. Curt

Have you considered taking the money and perhaps buying a 40 S&W instead? I'm just thinking that for the money, you can buy something more affordable to shoot, and have more fun.

Read that Colt is doing a 2009 run of their 1911 "Delta Elite' STAINLESS IN 10 MM. jACKETED BULLETS CAN BE SALVAGED FROM .40 s & w ROUNDS TO RELOAD IN THE 10. bRASS IS AVAILABLE BUT NOT CHEAP. ymmv. -

Posts: 305 (08/01/09 06:45 PM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If shooting the 10MM, buy a 1000 cases from Starline and start reloading using hardcast or jacketed bullets. Loads necessary to operate your typical 10MM are pushing it for some of the softer cast on the market. At 15 cents a case it isn't that bad, but obviously you don't want to lose too many. Since the primary cases I use are MH 577/450, frankly the 10MM case price looks dirt cheap. The MH cases I get down on my hands and knees and look for.

I know semi-autos are different from revolvers in regard to shooting .38's through a .357, .44 special through a .44 magnum etc; I was wondering since they share the same parent case if it was possible or not. I'm familiar with the .40S&W round, just haven't had any exposure to the 10mm aside from the Hornady dies having .40/10mm stamped on them.

Posts: 306 (08/01/09 11:20 PM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	No. The rimmed cases you cite headspace on the rim, making case length unimportant as long as the chamber is long enough. The .40 and 10MM headspace off the leading edge of the case, so the difference in case length makes them not interchangable. While some ignore this consideration in some rounds and shoot 9mm Para in 9mm Largo chambers, relying on the extractor to hold the case in place is a poor practice leading to broken extractors at the minimum. Considering the pressures involved and the cost of repairing firearms these days, saving a few bucks through using the wrong ammo seems like a bad idea.
