I was given several thousand small pistol magnum primers. I load for both 40S&w and 9mm so I can use the primers. The question I have is, how much should I drop the powder charge to offset the difference between the standard and magnum primers? Or, should I just set them to the side and order a .357 Ruger and use them for that? Thanks in advance fellas. Jnitrometh My pistol and rifle are only tools. I am the weapon.

Posts: 1932 (03/28/09 09:28 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sounds to me like a good excuse to get a 357 Ruger. I have a 20 year old Security Six and it's indestructable. I understand the later GP series are even better. The 9mm Lugr case has an awfully small inside volume to be used with magnum primers.

I was just talking about the same thing with a guy while at a bullseye match since it sounds like the only primers that anyone can find for Small Pistol are magnums right now. We were both thinking it would be nice if there was load data published for non magnum rounds using magnum primers but we both agreed that would mean you couldn't find magnum primers either since they would be sold out to. We both figured starting at 1.0 grains down and working up was the way to go.

Posts: 458 (04/04/09 12:44 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Magnum primers are about the powder used, not the cartridge. They burn a bit hotter for a bit longer than standard primers. They're made to light hard to ignite powders and for cold weather shooting. You only need 'em if your manual says to use 'em for a particular powder. You don't need 'em just because the cartridge has the word 'magnum' in its name either. It has nothing to do with it. Regular primers work just fine with .357 magnum loads. After all that, you don't have to worry about pressures. You will have to work up the load again though. Just like you would if you change brands of primer. If you want a Ruger .375 revolver, a GP100 is a dandy revolver. Do or have trigger job done. All new firearms require a trigger job due to frivolous U.S. law suits. Just changing the springs will do. It's not quite the same though. Spelling and grammar count!

I understand that just because the primers say "magnum," that does not mean that you have to use them with the .357 or .44. I was actually just being a smart alec. As far as the data, I will try dropping my load by one grain and see if it works. Jnitrometh My pistol and rifle are only tools. I am the weapon.

Posts: 708 (04/05/09 12:57 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I may be wrong, but was under the impression that magnum primers were harder or stronger to withstand the higher magnum pressures. Might not be the best bet for guns with a light pin strike. 'holic
