I just received my u-fixem m44 from Century. It is perfect except for a chunk missing from the stock. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of wood the
Russians used in these?

Wow! Talk about square-bashing! Still, the wood is fresh; not oil-soaked and I'll bet that the repair will be easy enough to do and match-up.

How much did that "u fix em" M-44 cost. I'm sure there are plenty of stocks to be had for free or almost.
I Had a Polish M-44 with same damage. |

I paid $49.87 for it. I wanted a project, but woodworking is not my area of expertise. I have obtained a piece of Birch for the repair(thanks for the info). It
will be a learning experience for me. If I could find another stock cheap( I have found some for around $39), that would work too, but I am at least going to
attempt a repair.

I got one of those too, and it looks pretty much exactly the same. Perfect metal, perfect bore - probably unfired - perfect crown that you could cut your
finger on - but a broken toe. Crap. I'm really not sure how you'd fix that. Shaping the wedge is the hard part. I imagine that once you had the wedge
shaped and the bitter edge of the stock smoothed, you would drill holes for dowels in the stock and the wedge, then glue the two parts together. This would be
the perfect stock to refinish with Tru-oil, BLO, or tung oil.
Frankly my big motivation for fixing this up would be to be able to get this baby to the range. The bore is the most beautiful I've ever seen on a Mosin-Nagant, and the trigger feels really smooth. I'll bet it's a real tack-driver.

don't look like that hard a fix.may be a problem to color match, but shouldn't be that big a deal to shape the fix to stock shape.maybe cabnitman will
wander by and give some hints. jwr

Projects like this are how we learn the tricks of the trade!
By practicing on an old beater or "UFE" we're not risking a high value gun, and when we get it right we've got a neat old range blaster. Every now and then they have "Threefers" in which you can usually get enough parts to mix and match and come up with at least one decent rifle - and a bunch of spare parts. |

Use Tightbond III glue and you will never have to worry about it coming off. Just work fast as the glue sets quickly.

It's not that difficult of a fix, but it may be a little time consuming. I however would use Accraglass and after that set I would drill and dowell the
patch to the stock before shaping. 5/16 to 3/8 dowells would be about right.
Of course if you had some machinery you could "refurb" the stock with a patch something like the Arisaka stocks, dovetailed in. That wouldn't need dowell re-inforcements.

My $40 replacement stock just came in from Numrich, and it looks OK with a minor repair in the forestock. The end result is a virtually unfired Russian 1946
M44 for $80. That turned out pretty well. I may order a laminate stock as well just to have a pretty one to re-do in tung oil. Beauty AND the beast, eh?
That's hard to beat.

Ya gotta love these Mosins!
Cheap to buy (unless you're into the snipers or rare collectables) and cheap, readily available parts; built like a Russian tractor and reasonably Peasant - proof. Decently priced, abundant ammo... Fun to tinker with, and even funner to shoot! |

Dave: How did the repair turn out? Looked to me as if you had everything going right in your last photos. Nice method to the repair.
