Posts: 440 (04/26/09 09:40 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I went to the local range today for the first time this year. It closes every winter and opens March 1. They have made a few changes, though. Their numbers are 3x what they were last year. The RSO said that he has to watch folks like a hawk as so many new shooters are showing up. He said that he regularly asks people to leave because they do not follow the safety rules. Anyone else experiencing this?

Posts: 2948 (04/27/09 08:34 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The range I go to (since the rock quarries were bought out and "posted") sees a LOT of rednecks and idiots....holes shot in the roof and muzzles pointed EVERYWHERE. It also lacks any supervision. I only go on weekdays and even then it's rare to be there alone. At least it isn't loaded with trash. I think people are just hording up all the ammo. In fact, NOW would be the time to start an ammunition company! hsc

Posts: 976 (04/27/09 11:22 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The range I belong to was pretty much self-policing several years ago when membership was below 1K. Mostly competition shooters that were well versed in range safety and behavior. No RSO's during the week, only a match director or two at weekend competitions. Rarely any problems.... The club decided to keep recruiting members from the general public in order to make things bigger and better I suppose. Then the "bubba's" started showing up (with their friends in tow) and the troubles began. First the holes in the target stands (2-1/2 inch steel pipe). I think they got to upwards of $5K a year to replace them. Then the holes in the roofs over the shooting benches. Then they had one (or more) individuals running around stuffing every roll of paper to be found in the toilets and flooding the restrooms. Then the ultimate....... rounds were leaving the range and blowing through the patio doors of someones home a long way away. Since then the place is no longer a shooting range. More like a prison camp now. Electronic gate keys needed to enter and leave each range, an army of RSO's, and security camera's EVERYWHERE. The slightest infraction of any range rule caught on camera will get you banned for life. Not a very enjoyable environment to be in anymore. I'm waiting for the construction of the guard towers and razor-wire fences to begin any day now....... All it takes is ONE bad apple. Unfortunately the world is FULL of them these days. <rant off> --------------------------- He who lives by the sword, should go out and get a really nice sword.

While shooting pistols yesterday, my friend and I witnessed someone clear over at the rifle range being chewed out for some infraction of the rules. I am glad there is renewed interest in the shooting sports, but I want everyone to be safe about it.

Posts: 499 (04/27/09 06:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	miller - my dad and I got tried of dealing with/experiencing/dodging the range ninjas, the Rambo wannabees and the boy howdys so about 6 years ago, we bought about 10 secluded acres on the other side of Nashville, and built our own range no fuss, no bother and certainly no interruptions might not be for everyone, but it works for us and our extended family private property is just that - private and above all safe! the only catch is the firearms that we could not buy, having sunk our $ at the time into good ol' mother earth but if we had to do it again, we would in a heartbeat for it will something to pass down to the grandchildren, and generations beyond Bob

I went out to the Fort Bliss Rod & Gun club range today, and i think I was the only one on about a half mile of ranges. I was on Range 7, the 100 yd rifle range. Did OK: the CAR 15 shot a 10 shot, 1 inch group today, a whisker better than she normally does; the 10X scope might have had something to do with it. Of course it was a Monday, and I stay away from the place on weekends, as the ranges get pretty crowded then.
