Any Precussion Sharps fans |

This might be the wrong forum but I havent seen a precussion breechloader forum. Anyone mess with precussion Sharps? I may try a repro for I never shot one. I
picked up an original New Model 1859 Sharps carbine thats in decent shape. It was made in 1861. Bore is good but its been used. The buttstock is neet because
it has wear where the trooper had it on horseback. Looks like the saddle rubbed it. I would love to shoot it and have a repro breechblock I could install but I
guess I'll use this as a wall hanger and find a repro to shoot. I always liked Civil War Breechloaders. I can post pictures if anyone wants to see.

Of course we'd like to see pictures!
Because it's a percussion cap ignition single shot, I'd say it is okay here, but because it's a breechloading paper cartridge rifle I'd say it would be okay on the BP Cartridge forum as well. I'm thinking it should be fine in either or both places!!! |

I had an Italian repo back in the '80's, well made and a lot of fun to shoot. I didnt make paper cart's for it, just loaded loose powder behind a
.54 minnie. Mine was a carbine, and the only thing wrong with it was the rear sight was fixed on a loose pin, caused it to lean to one side a bit when flipped
up for long range. Like a dummy, i traded it off in '88 and now I regret it (of course!) DM

You can see the wear in the buttstock. I like the Sharps with patchboxes. I wish it was in brass but harder to find. Honestaly hard to find any still in
precussion most were converted to 50-70 after the war. This one is used but all there and original configuration. Receiver and barrel serial number match. Made
in 1861. I want a repor so I can shoot one.

I'm impressed!
That one has definitely been there and done that!! Other than the buttstock, it really doesn't look too bad, and may even still be shootable (only your gunsmith [knowledgable of the BP era] knows for sure), but it wouldn't be too hard to restock it, if it is still shootable. Of course you'd want to save all the original parts so that it could be returned to original configuration!!! |

Its got some saddle wear on the buttstock. Still looks neet. It was used during the war. I got it cheep because of that and it came with a repro breechblock so
someone had set it up as a shooter. I had an original breechblock that I put back in it. Patina matched so you cant tell the difference. Loading lever is
original so I didnt replace it. I replaced 2 buggered screws with replacements from Dixie Gun Works. They got some of the Bannerman original parts. There again
these original parts have patinaed also so you cant tell I replaced 2 screws. I wanted a rear sight screw but they didnt have one of those. Bore had deep
rifeling and not pitted too bad. I'll clean it up. Bought a book on Sharps where they Id 4thousand of them with troopers that carried them sadly my serial
number wasnt in there. 4th Ohio had a few in this serial number range so it might be used by that unit. No way to say for sure since actual numbers dont match
so its a strong possibilty. Sharps are my favorate weapons of the Civil War. I bought this for the price of a repro. I was shocked when I saw it in a local
shop you just dont see a Sharps walk in. Now I have my first milslurp from that area. Thanks for looking

Get a repro and enjoy shooting it as much as you want. They are accurate enough. An Sharps now are collector items. I had one in mint condition I bought in 1951
From Robt. Abels antique gun dealer for $ 35 dollars. I sold it for $1500 at ashow Today it would probably go for $5000. Bannermans was a few blocks away
allhe had was a Quigly style Long rifle in 45/70 ,excellent cond. For $75. Today I only have a Sile Italian Cartridge carbine which will group clover leafs
from the bench with my reloads at 50 yards. Kowsky Raider.
