When he saw the AR 15 he said, "I have an airsoft gun that looks just like that!" LOL. After a few points on safety and some stance and weapon holding technique pointers, he was right on target! I forgot to take my carmera or I'd have some pics. Anyway, we shot the following: Henry .22 Lever action rifle, Marlin Model 60, Smith and Wesson 22A pistol, Browning Buck Mark, S&W AR 15 in 5.45 x 39mm, and Swedish M38. My friend now wants to buy a .22 caliber rifle! (Although I'd rather him get a milsurp, I don't think it's wise to push him in a direction he isn't yet willing to go). What .22 rifle would you suggest he can both readily find for around $100 to $180 dollars and really enjoy? hsc Last Edited By: high speed cruise 05/28/09 10:44 PM. Edited 1 time.

Posts: 3940 (05/28/09 11:07 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My first impulse is to recommend the Ruger 10/22, but there are plenty of vintage 22 rifles that IMHO are at least as good. I have a Mossberg 351k and a Stevens 87A that shoot as good or better than my Ruger. Both have much better trigger pulls than the Ruger, and they have tubular magazines with larger capacities and the ability to shoot 22 short, long, and long rifle ammo. They are made the old fashioned way, from forged steel machined by American craftsmen, when people cared about workmanship. You can still get parts from Numerich for many of these 30 - 60 year old rifles, and many are collecting dust in pawnshops across America (especially the ones made for Sears, Western Auto, etc... IMO the main advantage of the 10/22 is that there are tons of aftermarket stuff available to jazz the gun up, but let's face it, much of that stuff is a waste of money..

Posts: 655 (05/28/09 01:37 PM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'll suggest a second-hand Marlin 60 in stainless or a tube-fed Marlin bolt action, which can shoot shorts, longs and long rifle ammo. Techsights are available for the Marlin 60, which is a fine up-grade and that rifle, old blued or newer SS, is one great little autoloader. In my opinion, it's more accurate than the 10/22 off the shelf and a tube magazine doesn't get misplaces and hold more rounds that the standard 10/22 drop mag. I've owned both new and I'll rather buy Marlin over Ruger .22 period. Marlin has vastly more experience making accurate, reliable and affordable .22 caliber rifles and it shows in the final product. They are good shooters. The 10/22 is now being advertized at $229 plus dollars. Curt

Something like having a can opener or a tire pump, every home should have one. That being said, I heartily agree with some of the above posters that what the guy should be looking for is a good deal on one of the older real wood and machined metal bolt rifles like most anything in the Remington 500 series. Mouse eye accurate, they actually feel like a real rifle when you hold them. They are a joy to look at and even better to shoot. If you get him started there, he'll likely pick up a 10/22 on his own at some later date!

Posts: 5052 (05/29/09 12:01 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you want a nice bolt gun look at the Remington M5. They have come way down in price and are a full size solid gun made by Zastava. These used to be the Charles Daly Superior II. I picked one up for 219.00. I haven't had time to shoot it but the reports are great on it. They are very accurate and have a adj trigger. What ever he gets tell him to stock up on .22 ammo before it gets any more exspensive.

Posts: 591 (05/29/09 04:42 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I usually recommend a bolt action for a new shooter, depending on their experience and maturity and whether or not they will be shooting under supervision. The first step for a new shooter is learning the rules of safety and safe gunhandling and practicing them until they become second nature, I think a bolt action is a better way to master them. Like learning to drive with a manual transmission is a better way to learn driving.

All the Mark II's have the accutrigger, and the Mark II-G lists MSRP at $226. It's a wood-stocked sporter with open sights. I shot a rifle like that at a Boy Scout camp that had a Williams peep rear installed and a Lyman globe in place of the post front and it was SWEET. It shot like a target rifle. Mine will shoot with all my CMP target rifles with the right ammo. It happens to like CCI minimags most of all and that's fine by me. Other used alternatives are the Winchester Model 67 single shot and the Winchester Model 74 semi-auto. I grew up shooting both and they are incredible 22 rifles and can be found at prices in the same range as the Rugers. Note, Shop around for best Ruger 10/22 pricing. I've seen them for much less than $200. Around here they are now selling for around $250 and if you find a place having a big sale, you may find them for $219. I keep an eye on the prices of the Winchester 67, simply because it was my very first rifle I got for Christmas in 1959 when I was ten years old. And yes, I still have it and it is still the tackdriver it always has been. Around here at gun shows, they are normally running about $175 or so nowadays. I have no idea of what mom and dad paid for mine back in 1959. Probably something like $29.95 or so? Curt
