I have a Savage No4 mark 1, 2-groove barrel, with Parker Hale match sights. It's always shot extremely
accurately (wasted on me, in other words), particularly at longer ranges; 600 - 1200 yards (we like to shoot proper distances here in the UK...), though only
with military ammo (radway green, HXP, the South African stuff &c) - it's never shot worth a damn with boat-tails or modern commercial ammo. The
bore's .312+.
(At long range, its accuracy is as good as or better than my specialized 7.62 target rifle. At 300 yards or less, it's always been a mediocre performer.
Old-timers I've talked to at Bisley tell me this is usual with Number 4s.)
Lately, though, performance has been poor, even with proper ammunition, and I'm wondering if the bore is finally shot out. Is there any way I can tell just
by looking at it, or does it need to be examined by a specialist gunsmith? I can get it rebarrelled reasonably cheaply, but I'd like to stick with the
original barrel for as long as possible; the only available replacement barrels are 5-groove 1950s British manufacture.
Any advice gratefully received!
