thanks for the "bolt" help.heres the thing.have my dads Garand nothing special bout it,that I can see.he has a aftermarket stock on it,I've found
2/3rds of the origional stock, need the rear handguard, still looking for it and butt plate.can't see any markings, cartuches, ect on the stock parts I
have.looks like a shooter grade rifle, don't know where it came from, but the stock looks like it has some kind of shellac finish on it.isn't an oil
finish propper for this rifle.it's a Springfield Armory rifle sn# in the 1,500,000 range. thanks...jwr

I can't think of any US Military arms that were finished in shellac. I think Russia was the only country that relied on shellac to finish their rifle
stocks. Everything I have read on the Garand mentions a BLO finish that was applied in many coats and rubbed into the wood.

In the 50s and 60s a LOT of milsurp longguns were shellaced prior to being sold and/or by new owners.
Also, groups like the VFW shellaced many of their parade rifles. I have read that M1 wood was done at the factory with Tung Oil and in the field with BLO. |
