Out of Spec 7.62 x 54R |
Lead | |
|
I have the better part of a tin of 7.62 x 54R that is out of spec. The case leading up to the shoulder of the brass is slightly longer than other 7.62 x 54R
rounds that I have and this ammo with the slightly longer case will not chamber in any of my Mosins (91/30, M38, or Finn M39). It is a couple of hundred
rounds and I really don't want to waste it. Any suggestions? I bought it from Century a couple (maybe even 5+) years ago when it was really cheap. The
headstamp looks like a 68 on the bottom and a script E on the top. I don't remember where it was from as I opened the Spam can years ago and transfered
the rounds to a GI ammo can.

Pull the bullets and powder, re-size the cases and reassemble. That's all I can think of.

True that!
My bad for not mentioning it.
Good catch cosmo.

Well, got all the bullets pulled (all 440 minus the 5 I am saving out to measure and average the powder charge when it is time to start the reassembly process)
with the powder, bullets, and primed cases separated. My son-in-law picked up set of Lee dies at Cabela's for about $23 and I will pick them up when we
visit this Friday. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a week to begin resizing and reassembling due to a business trip. The kinetic puller separated the
rounds much easier than i thought. Most only too two "whacks," many only one, and a few took three. When i have to salvage my bad 9mm or .45 rounds
always seems to take 4 or 5.
I'll let ya know how things work out with the reassembly. |

Picked up the Lee dies and have started the resizing process. Most are not too hard, but you do need lots of lube. Without bullet, the resized brass will
chamber in all of my Mosins which the brass wopuld NOT do prior to resizing. After I get it all resized, I'll load up about 20 and see how they work prior
to going whole hog and loading everything. I will probably back off a bot on the powder with these reloads.

Well, an update on my out of spec Albanian ammo. The average powder measure on the original rounds was about 47 grains. I only measured 10 rounds and the
variation was between 46.5 to 47.9 grains. I decided to be somewhat conservative in reloading them and only used 45 grains. I have tried to be as consistent
as possible. First 20 rounds were reasonably accurate and functioned just fine (but still provided the very stout recoil in the 91/30). I am now in the
process of reloading the entire batch. So far, I have a little over 5% of the brass that is not making the reload due to bad neck cracks. Hope I never have
this kind of a problem with an entire case being out of spec again, but it has been a good learning experience.

I seem to recall that the Albanian ammo was a lot of concerns to a bunch of people when it was common on the market. Many stories about deformed cases, dented
cases and the like. But it was supposed to still shoot well IF you could get the rounds to chamber. I have never had any personal experience with it, but I can
imagine the problems an Albanian soldier might find with it in a combat situation. Maybe that is why they never went to war against mother Russia?

I have fired several thousand rounds of albanian surplus and although they have had dents, none have failed to chamber. My SVT40 loves the stuff. In fact, so
much so, that I use czech silvertip in the bolt guns to save my remaining albie for the SVT. Sorry to hear of your ammo issue but like a true milsurper it
sounds like you turned a bad situation into a good one.

The later dated Albanian... | ||

was reported to be not very good. I have several cases of the ammo. I think mine is dated in the mid 80s range. I have never had a problem with it and it
shoots minute of angle out of a couple of my Mosins....chris3
