The best ammo is like trying to ask what is the best car made today. But if you want some stories from the horses mouth, then I can share some. To me there are
three different types to be on the lookout for. They are in my preference and decending order of liking them as follows:
1. Golden Tiger made in Russia 2. Uly, made by Ulyanosvk Machinery Plant, also in Russia. 3. Cheetah. Used to be number one on my list, but it is nearly impossible to find nowadays as there was an import ban imposed on it due to its being made in Zimbabwe. Any of the Wolf stuff, a lot of people like, but it is too dirty and sooty for me, and not as accurate. The American loaded stuff, you are up to your own there, as I have never tried it due to its expense. As where to buy it, I can't help you much there. Watch all the ads and let your wallet guide you. Thanks for the information. I knew when I ask it was like asking "how long is a string" but thought I might get info from some people who had
experience and save time and$$$. The latter is in shorter supply than the first. Thanks again Al

I ordered my first 1440 round wood case of Cheetah from Vector Arms back when they first started advertizing it in Shotgun News. At the time a lot of people
thought it was overpriced, as compared to the other milsurp stuff available at the time. But when you looked at the price per round, it really was not that
bad. Those people who thought it was overpriced was simply looking at the "per case" prices and forgot to realize that a case of Cheetah contained
1440 rounds and a case of the other milsurp stuff only contained 1000 rounds. So you were actually getting 44% more in a case of Cheetah.
It dried up for a few months, then they were back advertizing it again, and I ordered another case of it and asked the gal on the phone about its availability in the future. She assured me that there were literally thousands of cases of it in Zimbabwe just waiting to get imported and Vector Arms had an exclusive agreement on importing it, so it would only be available from them. A month later, I called to order a third case of it, and the gal said they were sold out of it, as when it reappeared in the Shotgun News ads, there was a run on it, with some people buying up to ten cases of it at a time. Sadly to say, but the following month, The US government signed an import ban on anything from Zimbabwe due to their human rights violations, which to me is cutting off ones leg to spite a sore toenail. I don't recall ever hearing about any attempts to remove the ban in subsequent years, so all I can say is that there are probably thousands of cases of it still left in Zimbabwe just waiting for us. But I am not holding my breath on ever seeing it, as the UN likes to see firearms and ammunition destroyed instead of resold or shipped to other countries. The individual boxes it comes packed in is in 40 round boxes, which is twice the other stuff, and the few times I have seen it offered at gun shows, the sellers were trying to scalp people for anywhere from $19.55 to $24.95 a box! It was a good thing while it lasted, however. I have fond memories of it and still a case and a half to fall back on. Curt |

Wolf is the most widely available retail, and I've never had any issues with function. It has become sort of the default standard.
As M1 talker pointed out, it's not match ammo, nor is it the cleanest, but I clean pretty thoroughly every time I shoot and I only use my SKSs for casual plinking , so it is more than good enough for me. I've also shot Brown Bear and Golden Tiger, both Russian brands as well, and they seem similar to the Wolf, though I haven't shot enough of those to really do a careful comparison... I have a couple boxes of Norinco 7.62x39, but I haven't shot it and probably won't in the near future - I'm sure it's decent but it's probably not worth the cost since it's no longer being imported. American-made ammo in this caliber seems too expensive. Remington charges something like $15-$20 for a 20 round box...at those prices they'll never compete with the Russians. There is also the Yugoslavian surplus - brass-cased, but it is corrosive and probably not worth messing around with since non-corrosive ammo is available for similar prices. |
