Posts: 1 (09/29/09 10:14 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Thanks for a wonderful site with plenty of info. I inherited my grandfathers service rifle a few years ago. It was sporterized but I will not discusse that in accordance with site rules. When I inherited it there where almost no identifying markings on it. I was getting it registered and the gent I took it to had it for about 2 weeks before he was able to identify with certainty (not sure how, the markings are so few) that it was a Lee Enfield No1 Mk3. Well during the time he had the gun I purchased an identicle LE with full marking in all the right areas. It too was sporterized. my questions 1) I think it fires .303 Brit but was told if it doesn`t it would be .303 Sav How can I tell 2) The fact my Grandfathers gun has very few markings does that mean anything with respect to LE history Thanks guys

If the rifle was changed from the .303 British caliber then it should have some markings to indicate that, at least if it was done properly.

My Grandfathers service history is not clear, My uncles say he was a firefighter that served over seas (not sure in which capacity) and my father and another uncle say that he told them at one time or another that he was a sharp shooter over seas. I do appoligize for the lack of service info as everytime they get into this discussion it turns into a comedic arguement. My aunt has been in contact with veteran affairs and she has been trying to establish my Grandfathers role for many years. am I able to upload pics from my computer to the site or do they have to be hosted somewhere. If they can uploaded from my pc how can I do it

Posts: 4 (09/29/09 11:46 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	1st pic The Gun on the left is the one I bought The one on the rightwas my grandfathers There was no serial number on my Grandfathers gun that I can see as I had my grandfathers old telephone number stamped on it because I had to get it registered. There was a number under the rear sight but the registering guy said it was not a serial number There was letter H stamped on the barrel just behind the rear sight I also appoligize for the poor pics.

When I inherited the firearm I was younger and because I had a job working with the RCMP at the time and did not want to jepordize anything with respect to my employment and choosing to obide by the law I had the S/N stamped into it

Posts: 4105 (10/02/09 09:11 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't think either one of them were commercially built as sporters, since both rifles retain the military receiver bridge to facilitate stripper clip reloading. BTW, the receiver bridges and rear sight assemblies are a dead give away that both guns are LE No 1 Mark IIIs. What do the stamps on the receiver ( area on the right side between forearm and the butt) of the gun on the left say?

One might wonder under what circumstance G'father brought the old LE home?! One other thing I will mention, more for the sake of visitors reading this topic and just for the record. As a general rule, it is not just discussion of sported milsurps that is against the site rules... it is also against them to put up pictures of sported milsurps. But!... You're clearly just trying to research some family history here. I certainly am not going to begrudge you an opportunity to get it and I doubt much that any other moderator here would do either. That would definitely not be in the spirit of this site which is geared to sharing information and helping folks get along. ...annddd...
