No. 5 butt plate removal issue |
Lead | |
|
Just got my No. 5 this afternoon. Heavily shellaced and painted, nice looking bore. Disassembled as soon as I got it home to give it a once over, but I cannot
get the buttplate off. When I turn the top screw all it does is turn the bottom screw. All of the dissassembly info I have found shows 2 short screws holding
the buttplate on. These 2 screws are definitely connected somehow and I can only get them to loosen up so much. put a screwdriver in each and did some
turning, got about 1/8 of an inch of the screw backed out. Put a little oil in the gap to see if I could loosen it. Don't want to force anything. Has anyone
else had this issue and if so what was your solution? -Shazbot
How do I stop some big mean mother hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer is a gun, and if that don't work use more gun.

One is a long screw and the other receives it. Just use 2 screwdrivers and have at it, it will come out. Like you noted, they can be gummed up and rusted
together so patience and penetrating oil do help. Just keep working at it and you'll get it out.

Mine has two screws mating about an inch and a half from one end they go right through the buttstock, the short screw is female and the long screw male(the
long screw was on top). You could just try doing it up then loosening it off again until it starts to go a little bit more each time. Mine were hard to start
with too but loosened up in the end.

Ok, thanks guys, that's kind of what I figured. Letting some oil work on it and I figured I'd ask .

ok, so after leaving the rifle overnight with some oil soaking into the screws all they did was snap. So i guess i'm going to have to look for some
replacements of some kind.
