I recall that "BeanStringable" guy.. or StringBean, or BeanPole, StrungBean, BeanStrung, or some such...
...he thought he knew a thing or two about Mausers and US firearms... To me, he seemed like a self-righteous, pompous autocrat with absolutely NO sense of humor. If any of you guys run into him, tell him that life is short, and to take time to laugh at himself...

I'm sure a few people were wondering where I was. The answers would be...
1) Packing for a move (see the thread I just posted) and... 2) Maturing. I realize I was immature and cocky as hell and whiny and a know-it-all when I made the bulk of my posts. I figured I'd probably spare you for a few years of that and not really come back until I believed I'd matured enough. Well, it just kinda got hard coming back, since I reached that point while planning a move halfway across the country. My Geha book is also dead. Just not enough original sources. I am instead directing my energies into a baseball book which has attracted the attention of two publishers and has PLENTY of original sources. And Mike Petrov, if you're reading this, I did take the lessons you told me about book publishing and writing to heart. |

Hi guys! | ||

I don't know if any of you remember me, but up until a few days ago it had been about a year or so since I posted here. I've been around since 2004,
but I haven't been getting anything new for awhile. I think that's why some have left. They simply haven't had anything new to talk about. I miss
going to the local gun shop (now closed) or checking out Aimsurplus or another firearms site to see what was new. Things have really dried up, it doesn't
seem like there is anything new, and when there is it's usually out of my price range.
I really miss those Mosins from Aztec. For a while I'd order one just because I felt like it. After all it was only $50 plus shipping. |

Well, I've been here since about the time Bill set up the site. I have always felt at home here and Tuco's site with both sites acting more like
brother sites than competitors. Somehow my original log-on information went bye bye so I had to re-register thus my low post count.
I knew Big Mike and he did post here from time to time. Near the end of his life he got bogged down with blood sugar problems so his posts tapered off all over the internet. He is sorely missed and was one of those guys who was a one of the kind, broke the mould, not going to be another like him sort of man. You either loved him or hated him and I really loved that big guy. I also want to mention Dan Mayfield. Dan went by DM_FL but he may have logged in here using some variation of that name. Dan passed on in 2006 as the result of a sudden heart attack at the age of 43. Dan was generous to a fault and always pleasant to every person I ever saw him talk to. He was also one of the best amateur historians I ever encountered. He amassed an amazing collection that spanned rare French, Italian, Dutch and Austrian pieces but went out in all directions. When his collection was liquidated a lot of people were really amazed at the depth and quality of Dan's collection. Dan was not an educated person but he was one hell of a great guy and is deeply missed by myself. Indeed, I stopped going to the Ft. Myers gunshow after Dan died as it I just could not stand to see his spot filled by someone else. As to the slowing down of the gun collecting related sites. I agree with much of the sage discussion that preceded my comments. I would only add that for those of us who involved in these sites in the mid 90s it is so true that we really had a large family, tribe, community, what have you. We all basically knew each other, followed each others posts, usually behaved pretty well, played jokes and pranks on each other and felt we were on the cutting edge of collecting that represented history that had been ignored by the previous generations of collectors. They were truly halcyon days and will remain in the minds of those who were part of the community with warm tones and broad smiles. The good news is that collecting, like the economy is cyclical. I saw the community starting to slip as early as 2003 when large numbers of collectors and potential collectors were called up for duty in SW Asia. Within a few years after that time the economy began to slide for many of us and the ability to be involved in gun collecting with all that entails became strained. As bad as things are today, with large numbers of folks still in war zones and the economy seemingly bottoming out I am hopeful that we may well see a return to collecting within the next five years or less. We are still a strong community and we are , frankly, better informed now that we ever were in the past. Don't write us off yet! The 100th anniversary of the beginning of WWI is approaching and I would be willing to bet that will really coincide with a much larger and wider interest in the arms used in that conflict. |

Wow...what a great thread. Seeing some of these names brings back memories of when I first got interested in guns as more than a hunting tool.
I found a Yugo M48 at Dunham's, bought it for $89 and yahoo search brought me here. Nothernug and Branko on the Yugo section eased me into what would become much more than a hobby for me -- I ended up studying military history in college, am now a military reenactor, and sell and work on firearms for a living. Thanks a lot, guys! lol. And via e-mail ol' zeebill himself helped me pick out my first Finn rifle, an M39 from "gunsnammo," back when they had an FFL and everything. Still have that one, too. That must
have been early '04. Thanks Bill.
I've been absent here lately, not having posted much in a couple years I think. No good explanation, I guess, as I've been active one a couple other boards, but I did get heavily into Evil Black Guns for a while. Plus, as many have said, the "just arrived, a cool rifle you've never seen, $89.99!" days have ended. This place was my research point for all that stuff -- I heard about them here, read reviews on condition etc., and found who to order from here. Literally speaking, without this site I never would have bought have the milsurps I've owned. Reading this thread (which has kept me up beyond my bedtime) has reminded me of how much it always has felt more of a "home base" than any other place on the 'net for me. Thanks to P. Bill for that.
Just the other day I stumbled upon one of Kevan9mm's posts and it cracked me up. He did go over the top regularly but he really had a unique and funny way of ranting about stuff. I think it's hilarious that oklahomaman got married and disappeared. Didn't he always used to brag about how great his single-man lifestyle was, and how he'd never marry?
Gunmaker (Mike Brooks) is active on another forum that's much closer in focus to his career -- and he still gets to rail on people for not being 'historically accurate' -- I love it. I'll never forget his "you might as well paint it hot pink" stock finish rants. Thanks for the reminders, all -- I'll make it a point to stop in more regular like. Tom

Ha Ha Great post and more names that bring back pleasant memories! Glad you enjoyed what you have gotten over the years and you will not realize till later in
life what a great plus it is to make your living in something you enjoy! For many years I just went to work so I could eat and eventually found a niche I liked
and worked hard at it and made a living too.
I miss Gun-makers posts and finish rants so much I can't believe it that he is gone from here. My nickname for him in words under my breath was "The Finnish Finish Nazi" ! How much I do miss Mike's input and knowledge! He brings back good memories just talking about him! I am very glad you are happy with what I steered you to long ago and still shoot and enjoy it. It was my privilege and I appreciate that chance to do that occasionally for good people. Getting long in the tooth now and I am beginning to realise that is quite a rare chance to make one feel good about the contribution one can make to what one enjoys! Bill

Although I seldom post much, I have long enjoyed coming here to see what folks were discussing.
I remember a lot of the "old timer" names mentioned here. I also wish there was more lesser-expensive milsurp being imported, but the wells have simply run dry. Anyway, I just wanted to say HI! and to let you know that you have once again put a smile on my face. |

Nice to see you, Dennis. I've been very happy with several purchaces I've made from you over the years.
You're right, the Milsurp pipeline has been dry/stagnant for quite a fews years now. |

Hey Dennis, nice of you to pop in. I guess I haven't seen you since a Jacksonville show or since the time you came up to Charlotte and dined with us at
Brazzas. Great food eh but not cheap.
Hope you are doing well.

I'm gonna have to make an excuse to come up Charlotte way before another couple of years passes.

It's great to see most of the old names I rememberd. Don't know if I'm an "old timer" , only been here from 02.
A lot has happened in the past year for me and I haven't been on much. Hope to fix that. Had to sell the old place and move here in the woods of Pa. Been building an addition here to have room and a new roof over everything. Hope to be done before winter. btw, I'm doing all this myself, don't know anybody here yet. Anyhow, it's good to see everybody again.
Stan.

I check in weekly, Mosins and Enfields still have my attention, as much as the rest of my world lets me have. I bought the last of the surplus Russian 7.62X54
ammo that our only gunshop had, and at the old price of $4.00 a bundle. The Wolf and Silver Bear were $18.00, didn't ask about 303, haven't seen any in
a long time, I still have a crate of South African Mk VII, and when that is gone....?

never posted much.

Like many others I was dragged in by the $40 Turks. I still have most of them and quite a few Finn 39s that you can't get for cheap anymore.
Because of Bill's management this place has remained "drama free" and that's a good thing. For a change of pace I got an AK (Romanian AES 10B) and a Gurkha built Gahendra rifle recently and really have enjoyed them. |

I missed out on the cheap Turk rifles, but have bought a few at local shows for really fair prices - Most I have sold off, but I kept an interesting one
