Deciding on a CMP purchase |
Lead | |
|
So, I'm thinking about another CMP purchase, and wanted some opinions. I'm leaning towards a field grade Winchester M1 Garand, because I already have
a Springfield. I do see a lot of the carbine manufacturers are still in stock though, and some are a bit cheaper than the $695 that the Winchester M1 costs.
I have an IBM and an Inland carbine. What do you guys think? How are the field grade guns? Is it worth the price tag?

If you have your heart set on a Winchester Garand, go for it. If you read their descriptions, you'll see the difference between the field and service
grades. Do you want it for a shooter? Are you concerned about accuracy? Carl

I'm concerned a bit about accuracy. My Springfield M1 looks beautiful, I bought it when there were only "service grade" guns at CMP and they
were $400, but it's not that great of a shooter. I also have a CMP Greek return 1903A3 with a stock that looks like kindling but it shoots like a laser.
I'd be happy to get something in between.

The CMP was "out" of Winchester Garands for the last 5 or 6 years... if they have them now, grab one while you can! If you can make a trip to the
North or South store, do so. They will be happy to loan you a muzzle-gage, and it's likely that you can find a "field-grade" with a
"service-grade" muzzle.

I bought two FG winchesters last month at the north store that gauged 1 and the other under that. HRA trigger groups. Good deal if you can go to the store to
pick them out yourself. Some were really beat up but none gauged over 2.5-3 on MW. The rack grades all needed barrels. No chance of a recrown saving them,
Out of 50 or so I checked, maybe 5-6 had a 1 to 1.5 MW. Like others said, get one now while you can. THe last time they had WRA's was in 2004-5. Service
grades were 595 then. FGs are now 695. That tells me next time they will be close to a grand and RG??
I got the winchesters to fill a hole. Im a sucker for a nice post war SA or
HRA over a Winchester anyday.

T OHeir wrote: Just remember, even though the website says their sold out, it doesn't mean there's none left in the stores (even though they're about as picked over as you can get).. I have a fantastic Service Grade Winchester Garand that I ordered when they had the big release a while back.. It's beautiful, shoots great, and as mentioned, the only thing on it that's Winchester is the receiver..
Ordering is nice, but if you EVER have the chance, pick out your own rifle at the North or South Store.. It's an experience you won't soon forget.. Excellent staff, and a gun junkie's wet dream.. So many to choose from!!!
