Posts: 27 (10/19/09 07:14 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None 1925/1953 MO Izzy hex with a laminated stock. It is GORGEOUS! Even the wife thinks it looks beautiful (but she doesn't know how much I paid for it yet! ). Now the big question, how can I get the cosmo off/out of it without screwing it up? I really don't want to use Bill's purple power on it, afraid it'll mess it up. Heat lamp with windex wipedowns? Thanks for any help. If I can get some nice pics to come out, I'll post ASAP.

Posts: 2334 (10/19/09 07:43 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I usually just wipe it down with an old Tee Shirt & call it good - Around here I have to wait till summer time for the temperature to get over 100 degrees - When that time of the year comes about, then I might take the barreled action out of the stock and then with newspapers/papertowels wrapped around the stock, I place the stock in my old beat up Geo with the windows rolled up and let the sun melt the cosmo out of the stock - I have done so with a couple of my cosmo soaked 91-30's and it is pretty effective - Although after a range session, some cosmo still seeps out here and there.... Posts: 22 (10/20/09 01:41 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Take the barrelled action out of the stock and pour one or two jugs of boiling water over it. Then take a toothbrush and give it a good scrubbing then the hot water treatment again. The hot water will melt the cosmoline off the metal parts and evaporate off quickly so you won't have a problem with rust. The stock might respond well to a similar but gentler treatment.

Posts: 567 (10/20/09 12:28 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've NEVER seen a Mosin stock (especially a 91/30) that had a cosmoline issue- outside of just wiping it down. As far as the metal parts- the boiling water treatment works great. The cosmo comes off in gobs. Using the sunlight in the summer is also a great option. Though It takes a while and you need to continually wipe it off during the day. ANOTHER option (if you have even more patience) is borrow the wife's hairdryer (dont tell her! ) and just aim that at the metal part that needs the cosmo off. Within 5 minutes that part will be as hot as if you soaked it in boiling water; cosmo will come off in gobs. I've used that technique sometimes with success (espeically with bayonet scabbards). IF YOU USE THE BOILING WATER TECHNIQUE: Don't forget to oil down all the parts before you call it a day. Yeah- the water will evaporate quickly but better play it safe anyway in case some gets stuck somewhere... -Palimino

Both break down the cosmo and things clean up pretty good with either one. Just be careful with the disposal of used rags. I filter the fluids back into a third container for reuse.

Posts: 5 (10/21/09 01:19 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Seems like all these things save a few will damage the wood, its a tough situation, you want it clean but not dried out and looking like a peice of driftwood. I like the car w/windows up idea and you could try kitty litter too. Using a hydroxide cleaner(oven cleaner) will chemically change the cosmo into soap, but, like I said it dries the wood and sucks out all the woods natural oils. ps: post some pics!

Posts: 721 (10/21/09 04:42 PM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I use a small steam cleaner with an assortment of tips, including brass brushes. Usually I'll break down the metal parts and soak them in a large covered glass jar of "Ed's Red", while using the steam cleaner on the barrel, receiver and bolt body. It'll melt and blow out the grease and dirt very quickly with a pointed tip, and then gets a treatment of clean ER made with lanolin and acetone. Since this is also a great bore cleaner and metal treatment it'll get a final wipe down before reassembly and the safe or range. I should point out that the heat from the steamer will help the water evaporate quickly from steel and the lanolin will act to remove and protect the metal against moisture in storage or the field. The steamer will also blow off surface cosmoline in the receiver/barrel channel quite well and the steam when applied to small dents and dings with a pointed tip, will help swell the compressed wood, sometimes so well that you have to look hard for old damage. If I don't use Purple Power and boiling water, wrapping the stock in black plastic and t it on the car top in the sun will sweat out grease, which is a wipe and repeat process. Better yet make a solar oven by taking a long, open, narrow coffin-like box, cardboard or wood, lined with heavy foil on the inside, and wrap and lined it with black plastic, with the top open to the sun. Place the gun in the box, cover with heavy clear plastic in the sun and wipe and repeat until the wood stops sweating goop.
