Hello Spooled,
What area do you live in? If you have chain sportingggoods stores around you like Dunhams or Big5 they tend to have m-91/30 mosins around for less than $100 bucks and are generally in nice shape. When you start looking at the carbines like m-44s m-38s etc.. they can run about 150 and up. For $100 bucks I think you would be happy with a m-91/30. It is the longer rifle and has the gear with it. bayo cleaning kit sling etc.. Good for hunting too. Mike P.S there are no unissued mosin nagants, they look unissued because at some time in their life they were arsenal refinished and rebuilt. If you did find a truly original unissued one you will pay hundreds even thousands of dollars.

If you don't have a large sporting goods store with cheap mosins, then your best bet may be to find a local FFL (gun store) that will do transfers for a
reasonable cost (anywhere from $25 - $50 depending on your state/locality) and order from AimSurplus.com or jgsales.com which both have arsenal refinished
91/30's in the $75-90 range.
Basically, you'll send the online seller a copy of the local store FFL and they'll ship the gun to them. The local store will then transfer the gun to you according to your local laws and charge you the transfer fee for the service. Gun shows are also a good place to pick up Mosins - just be careful to look one over good before buying. - vzett |

And welcome to Parallax Bill's forums. I beat out the hosts and moderators in giving you a warm welcome this time! Yes, your location is important as
places like Big 5 are in the west and Dunhams is in the east. They have had some fairly nice rebuilt M91-30's for about a hundred dollars give or take a
few, depending if they are on sale or not.

couple more ?'s
1. The rifles at aimsurpluss say that they have "dark bores" Im not really into that, as stated above. Unless they all do? 2. I found a site w/ "unissued" m44s w/all accs. for $79! Unfortunately they are out of stock, that would have been perfect as I like the looks of the m44. Anyone know where I can get this deal somewhere else? 3. Are the carbines less accurate? thanks. 4. Whats the difference in the hex/round bolts? which is preferable?

1. Dark bores are pretty common in Mosins and most surplus rifles from the age of corrosive ammo unless the rifle was very lightly used. Unless the bore is
severely worn, it should still shoot fine. These aren't match rifles by any stretch even with pristine bores.
2. Wideners.com was the last vendor I know of with wholesale M44's and they were in the $140 range. This seems to be the current floor on M44 and M38 prices. 3. It's pretty much a toss-up on accuracy. You'll get a lot of variation with Mosins - that's one reason to get more than one over time. Different rifles will 'like' different ammo too. Either style will shoot acceptably for the range or casual hunting. The Finnish M39's are generally considered the most accurate of the Mosin family, but these will set you back $220+ at current prices. 4. Hex receivers were eliminated in the 30's to save time on machining the receivers. There's no difference in function. Many prefer the looks of the hex receivers (or the earlier year dates) so hex models often command $10-$30 more than round receiver rifles in the same condition. |

80 bucks at Century....invoice is actually 59$..but they hit you with 10 for accessories and 10 for bayonet
I ordered two and a round and hex receiver arrived. |

SOG (Southern Ohio Guns) lists the basic M91/30 at $69.95 with bayonet, sling, oil bottles in pouch. I bought one of these as my first MN a couple of years ago
from SOG when they were $79.95 with accessories and the rifle is very nice for the money invested. Listed as "dark bore" but is bright, clean and the
rifling is fine.

The better wholesalers will usually grade rifles conservatively to help ensure customer satisfaction - so it's not uncommon for them to list an entire lot
as 'dark bore' even though many will be in better condition. It's also hard to tell the bore condition on many of the surplus rifles without a full
cleaning/degreasing which is something the wholesalers don't really have time for if they're going to sell rifles for under $100 so they post the
condition as 'worst case'.
