A lot of people get confused with 1 and 2. They think they have to join a club that holds matches and then shoot in those matches.

Actually, you could do: 1 then 2......or........2 then 1. In the big scheme of things........it wouldn't matter........as long as it gets done before the
paper work is sent into CMP.
My DCM/CMP story......... I got my first Garand from the DCM......it was way back when, they were still called "DCM." It was suppose to be a buy of a lifetime. Yup, you were limited to 1 rifle for your lifetime. Well.......I did what was required, join a club, shot the matches (IIRC it was two matches to qualify), got fingerprinted, signed the affidavit w/ a notary, and sent off a postal MO. I waited and waited (was it 3-6 months). One day, the package finally came, via the US Postal Service mail truck. I felt like a kid at Christmas. Many years later the "1 in a lifetime," was dropped. So, I joined the Garand Collector's Asso. (IIRC it was $25 and you got a great magazine subscription). Then, I shot a match that was held at a local club. No one cared about your score, as long as you participated, that was good enough. And, no membership was required. That club just wanted to get folks interested in shooting. The "carrot" was that by shooting with them, they would sign you off for the "shooting requirement" of the Garand purchase. And, IF you decided to join their club..........well, they were more than happy to sign you up. I probably bought 6 Garands that year. Aloha, Mark

I have something of a dumb question to ask...
I'm trying to dig up some match result sheet that will satisfy the proof of marksmanship requirement. Haven't found one yet, since I haven't participated in any kind of match in a while. I have found all of my old Boy Scout stuff though. As a scout I did the rifle shooting merit badge, and after I made Eagle Scout rank I participated in a few shooting matches sponsored by the troop. That was over ten years ago though - do you think they'd accept any of that as proof of marksmanship? Even, say the paperwork from a rifle shooting merit badge? EDIT: Just FYI, I did get a respinse from the CMP on this, and they said that earning the rifle shooting merit badge will satisfy the proof of marksmanship requirement. Good to know for grown-up Boy Scout alumni!

I plan on going up to the north store but I don't have live fire training or whatnot. where can i go to take a marksmenship test and get papers showing
the results? Im in ohio so the drive should only be a couple hours to port clinton. I would like to purchase a garand since it helps me get through my work
days thinking about owning one. What other documents do you need to bring like a backround check document? or somthing like a ................. (lost train
of thought because im in a bad mood over my girlfriend!) birth certificate or social security? what else is required other than the club membership and the
marksmenship test. I thought i read a while ago the north store had a high tech shooting course that you could use but maybe i'm wrong. correct me if im
wrong please. I plan on getting a service grade and don't know much about m1's except that they are sexy, accurate and american made.

Have you ever shot in a match of any kind? Concealed carry permits, one of the Boy Scout shooting merit badges, an FFL of any type.....
When you get that requirement taken care of send your info off to the CMP and you will be preregistered. You may want to check their website for more information and ask over at the CMP's forum. Welcome to Parallax as well. |

never got a chance to shoot in a match yet. I am still a beginner and haven't been to the range more than 5-10 times in my life. don't have concealed
permit. I would like to have a concealed m1 garand permit tho jk. I just want some info on where to obtain the rest of the paperwork I don't have. like
joining a match, i know nothing about where to begin there. I can fill out the paperwork when i get there, I just want to make sure I have the right stuff
before i make the same mistake some others have made and had to go home with their tale between their legs. (instead of an m1)

You're gonna have to have some type of marksmanship training.
Where are you located? |

Thank you! I thought this program had been discontinued and I'm very happy to find I was wrong. I will apply this weekend and save up my money. I am an Army vet and have a License to Carry for over 15 years, and I can get the rest easily enough.
IIRC, my local gun dealer was telling me all kinds of bad stories about how this was a really bad thing - government inspectors in my home or some such-and I am shocked to find he was telling me an untruth!!!! mark Added: I also had a marksmanship merit badge from scouts, but that was around 50 years ago and I have no idea how I would prove it. My old uniforms don't fit anymore.....

You mean you didn't keep your old merit badge cards?
Sounds like your dealer is wanting to keep thing to himself or he is really ignorant. Kind of makes you question anything he says now doesn't it? |
