I'm assuming true hammer-type pistol would be better than a striker fired pistol, but would like opinions on this from people more knowledgeable than myself.
Which pistol would you recommend and why?

Need help choosing a 9mm pistol |
Lead | |
|
I'd like to buy a 9mm pistol for target practice and general plinking. I'd like to stay under $600. This is not something to be used for concealed
carry, so weight and size are not important (within reason). Accuracy is more important.

My first pick would be a used High Power, a used Sig would be good also. Both these pistols are very accurate and reliable.

I second the Hi-Power motion, but around here you can't even touch a used one for under $600 if there's even one to be found.
There's such a variety of reliable pieces out there nowadays. A Walther P-1, Daewoo DP-51 (very nice pistol for the $$) and the single stack SIG's are out there and all very reasonable in price. Even some Berettas are floating around in the 92 series that are under $500 with two mags at the retail level that look close to new.

If I had to bet my life on a 9mm it would be a Glock 17. It's is also the only thing you are going to find new for under $600. At least around here......
Also a fine, accurate, plinking pistol. |

I'd say whatever strikes your fancy. Just about anything from Glock, SIG, Beretta, CZ, Ruger, etc. would work for general plinking and range work. For
pure target work I'd probably look for some form of 1911 in 9mm. Something from STI, Springfield or others. The single action trigger system generally
offers you a better target trigger than a lot of the double action or striker fired guns. A S&W 952 makes a great 9mm target gun, but that one's well
outside your price range.

Ruger SR9... good pistol, accurate enough -- all for under $500!

Sig or Glock, new or used because they are accurate, reliable pistols and they set the standard in my opinion.

The new Hi-Powers that are a "reintroduction" of the older all steel type are ove $1,000, you could get lucky like me and find an older one that
someone thinks is "broken" and all it needed was a $5 new sear and it's good as new. For pure shooting and fun, you can't beat the old
Hi-Powers, I would have preferred a fixed sight model but for $300 some odd I wasn't going to turn down an adjustable sight example.
Don't forget about police and security trade ins, I know the security company I worked for would trade in the older Glocks they had and just get new ones, so a few years ago some lucky people were able to pick up some barely used but holster worn Glock 22's for less than half the cost of a new one, I wanted to buy my old duty pistol but I left the job to join the army before the "updated". Also, lots of PD's dumped stuff like S&W 5906's, S&W Sigma 9mms, Rugers and Beretta 92F's when they started going crazy for Glock .40's which are fast becoming the ubiquitous police gun. The PA State Police dumped a bunch of Beretta 96D .40's a few years back in favor of Glocks in .45 GAP so once in a while a few of the stainless 96D's turn up locally and these mysterious LHPD marked S&W 5906's seem to be at every gun shop I visit in PA so some agency must have traded in lots of them. The CZ-75/85 "family" of pistols is a fine choice, my 85B was NIB for under $500, if I recall, it might have been like $400 and change and it was one of the best gun purchases I have ever made. That gun has given me great service and continues to do so, and probably will for the rest of my life, and has served as a shooter, practice/training gun, glove box gun, occasional winter carry gun, and is now my downstairs "TV room" piece in case something goes bump outside and I need to grab something fast. I got one of the excellent ProMag 17 round mags for it, and keep the original 16 rounders it came with loaded and ready next to it. I also have some cheap crappy mags I use as "range throw down" mags for when I really get on it and want to do real move and shoot drills at my range or backyard. Basically the CZ-75 does it all, and finding parts like springs is easy, Wollf makes them and also EAA/Tanfoglio Witness springs fit too, and the Witnesses are hugely popular so parts are everywhere. There's a reason why there are so many "CZ75 clones" around, because other companies in Europe copy what works! The CZ75 also being updated by CZ with the poly frame guns, and also the more tactical type SP-01 with the light rail and wierd frame. I would grab a steel one ASAP before CZ gets dumb and phases it out in favor of the poly frame "Phantom" or Shadow, whatever it's called. I love the classic non-rail all steel CZ75, and I am looking to add both a stainless model and track down an older East Bloc era gun, from when they still had "Made in Czechoslovakia" on the frame. If you want to go inexpensive (not "cheap") I hear Arcus in Bulgaria makes good guns, they have a sort-of DA Hi-Power clone, that goes for $350 or so. Maybe not a ultra top shelf gun, but I would pick one up just to shoot cheap steel case 9mm through it without worrying about breaking an extractor on one of my "good" guns. I keep fighting off the temptation to buy a Hi-Point full size 9mm, because they are so darn CHEAP locally where I'm at, like $180, but I never have partly because they are so ugly, and cheaply made, and I already have enough 9's to last 3 lifetimes, so hard to justify a "cheap shooter". I always use the excuse "I just want a cheap shooter/beater/car gun" when I buy "off brand" stuff, but I think I would rather go with a Taurus PT92, the Arcus, a Witness or a TZ-75 the next time this urge strikes me and I happen to have some cash laying around.

Hi-Powers and Sigs seem to be a little over my price range of around $500. I prefer to buy new since I've had spotty luck with buying used. I just
don't want to play detective and try to figure out the REAL reason it's being sold.
So far, new Glock or Beretta 92 are in the ball park. A cheaper alternative I've heard about is the Taurus 24/7 ($380). Seems to have a lot of positive reviews on the web and other gun boards. Of these, I suspect the Beretta would be the more accurate with the SA trigger. |

You can't beat a M-92 Berretta for an easy-shooting, works-all-the-time, accurate handgun. If concealed carry is not your concern, the M-92 would be my
first choice.

I have a 24/7 in .40 I'm very pleased with. If there's any complaint, I'd say the trigger is on the spongey side, but it's reliable and
accurate. I also have a Ruger P95 that's a workhorse. If you like a larger frame, it's hard to beat.

I've heard very good reviews of the IWI Jericho and am strongly considering one myself. They're basically CZ-75's, but with a few design
improvements here and there.

Just bought a new model 19 and it looks like a good gun. My sister carries one as a duty pistol and like it.

a Smith&Wesson M&P9. Bought one @ 2 years ago, put a bunch of ammo thru it with no problems. The interchangeable backstraps are a bonus and the
trigger isn't bad for an out of the box pistol.

A CZ WITH the Kadet 22 Conversion Unit is looming in my future. If you find a good Browning HP you can get the Ciener unit for it. 9MM can get expensive PDQ
even if you reload.

Had a chance to shoot my new Glock 19 and really liked the trigger as compared to my S&W Sigma. The pull is much shorter and makes shooting more accurate.
Easily got most of the rounds on a paper plate at 25 yards first time out. Try some out at your local gun shop and then get the one that fits.
