Has anyone brought up a semiauto Sten? I played around with a Sten kit a while ago. I will NOT mention what happened and how much fun it was. IIRC the kit cost
$40.

The Sten would have to be reworked to a closed bolt system, plus lengthen the barrel to get around the NFA stuff. A lot of work IMHO.

Is it not possible to make an open bolt semiautomatic only?

Mountain Doctor wrote: Oh, it's possible. It's also illegal. Open bolt semi UZI's, MAC's, and other subgun based pistols/carbines were readily available back in the day, but they were also "very easily" converted to full auto. In 1982, the BATF ruled that open bolt firearms produced henceforth would be considered NFA items and regulated as such; they grandfathered the semi-automatic open bolt guns produced prior to this time, to allow them to remain classified as semi auto. Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up... |

A repro MP40 in semi would be neat, an Stg44 would be lots cooler though.......since it's a repro there could be some room for "interpretation"
and it could be made in 7.62x39 just to make it more shootable. Since it's not a genuine Stg I wouldn't feel the need to have one in 7.92 Kurz, but
offering it in both chamberings would be good for the true absolute purist collector who wanted it in the original chambering. I suppose for a handloader it
would be worth it, and also to be able to shoot the actual caliber.
A 9mm semi-subgun would be a better choice because it's an available caliber AND in the same chambering as the original. I just wish the Kahr thompsons came with the ability to readily accept genuine Lyman adjustable sights, I tried and the screw holes are different and I had to mount an A1 fixed sight on my 1928 type carbine. |

"Open bolt semi UZI's"
Never existed. I thought they did until I did some buyer's research for future purpose of eventually getting a Model A or Model B carbine. The first two dozen or so guns (which were sort of "proto-Model A's") brought in were closed bolt, but had fully supported boltheads. For some reason, the ATF thought this made them really easy to convert to full auto and made IMI alter the bolt design. IMI recalled all the guns with fully supported boltheads and converted them with the Model A semiauto bolts and supposedly accounted for most but not all. Because prototypes with open bolts existed in Israel but were never exported combined with the fact that there were a handful of guns that were supposedly easy to convert to full auto (at least according to the ATF), the "open bolt Uzi" rumor got started. Another good one I was thinking of were two semiauto versions of the Madsen SMG. A pistol with no stock and a carbine with a longer barrel. A reproduction Marble's Game-Getter with an 18" barrel would also be pretty neat. |

I'd like to see a semi-auto carbine for the 500 S&W cartridge. Sort of like the 44 Ruger. It'd make a neat brush gun.

I thought that I just saw a semi-auto sten "carbine" offered by SOG or AIM in a flyer I received a few days ago...
