The movie does a great job with weapons: K98's, MG34, MP40, PPSH (Germans prefer and say why), M91/30, P38, Luger. All blank-firing devices can easily been seen, the muzzles look much too small.
House-to-house fighting is well-represented, the general suffering of the battle is evident.
General Paulus is shown as a decent and almost fatherly figure, all the personal story of the movie is on a single unit. So Paulus' failure to breakout of the city is not covered.
Emotion: the human plight is pretty grim and historically correct. Nazi cruelty is clearly evident, along with what readers of Stuka Pilot would be familiar with, ie: "Germany is invading Russia to protect Europe, etc." Any German who doesn't wish to be cruel is ostracized by Nazi leadership. Later a cruel Nazi is shot by his own men, and none too soon! I wonder how often that happened in the actual battle? Desertion is also shown which I don't know how many soldiers did desert but I'm sure some did.
Although the movie was really good something seemed lacking that most American movies have.....can't put my finger on it.
It WAS just like "Das Boot," though in that you'd never want anyone to ever fight a war again. So much suffering and so sad I don't know if I can watch it again and I bought the movie.
