Do I need to hacksaw that off and get a flip up front sight to replace it?
Or just give up on mounting a scope low to the upper and get a detachable carry handle and mount a scope on to that piece?
It looks goofy, but it works and is solid as can be, less the cheek weld and according to my handy-dandy bore sighter, it is dead on the money, plus or minus a click or two to be discovered with actual firing.
If it would just sit a little lower on the upper, I wouldn't feel so bad about posting the picture.

No offense buddy.
I don't even have an AR.
