Posts: 8 (11/06/09 10:25 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Greetings Everyone. I have a question which I'd like to humbly submit to the forum members. When I fire more than 3 rounds out of my 98 Mauser I have to ratchet the hell out of bolt handle to get it in the vertical position to extract the spent casing and chamber a fresh round. To the best of my knowledge the bolt assembly is properly lubed so I can't see why this is happening. It appears to be a heat issue due to the fact that once I let the rifle cool off the problem dissipates. After each round fired the bolt mechanism gets progressively harder to operate. After the third round I literally have to place my left hand on the weapon and use considerable force with my right hand to work the bolt. Something isn't right. Any answers as to why this is happening would be most welcome!

Posts: 483 (11/06/09 12:04 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Try doing a REALLY good, long cleaning to the chamber. You could have some build-up in there that makes it hard to open when warm/hot......same thing happens quite often with Mosins......with them it's due to build-up of lacquered cases. Clean the SNOT outta the chamber and it usually makes the problem go away. Could be what's going on with yours......my .02 worth.... Posts: 9 (11/06/09 12:13 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Once I get the bolt handle in the vertical position, the actions works like butter. The problem lies in getting the bolt handle up. I'm going to clean the hell out of it again. Should I get in the chamber with something and literally scrape the lacquered areas? It doesn't seem like using a rag and such is doing the job.

Posts: 1390 (11/06/09 01:55 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Perhaps some JB Bore Paste to "polish" your chamber would help. By the time you have rotated your bolt to vertical it has already withdrawn the case from the chamber the critical amount to free any binding due to the tappered case walls. you can use the paste on a patch and just do a lot of rotational as well as back and forth "scrubbing". It might work better to actually use a fired case slathered in the paste, and work it in and out of the chamber with the bolt's action as well. There are actually a few things on the bolt that could be causing such binding as well, but if the problem doesn't exist until the barrel heats up, the bolt certainly doesn't heat up fast enough to alter anything in just a few shots, so that really does suggest the problems are in your chamber as has already been suggested.

It looks like there is indeed a lot of crap built up that I missed. I'm going to go down and score some JB bore paste and follow the advice given me. What sucks is the local firing range I go to doesn't have a cleaning station so it's damn near impossible to make corrections in a live fire situation. I need to get into a local gun club!

Posts: 11 (11/06/09 04:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It seems like it's taking more force to load the bolt then it should. I replaced the 19lb spring with a 22 pound spring. I'm wondering if perhaps there is some kind of friction occurring in the bolt.

The steel-cased Romanian ammo is lacquer-coated, and as the chamber heats up, the lacquer can become sticky and glue-like, especially if there is a build-up of it in the chamber. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand? Posts: 12 (11/06/09 07:49 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The last time I took it out, the problem definitely was worse shooting the steel cased Romanian ammo. I went and purchased the bore paste and have burned through a LOT of pipe cleaners and Q-Tips. LOL. The damn thing was caked with so much grease and residue. I still think I need to get the stuff that's nuked into the chamber out. Is it safe to find some kind of steel brush and CAREFULLY remove the deposits from the chamber rim(right where the chamber does the 90 degree into the barrel) Or am I better off just slowly pluggin' away at it with the Q-Tips?

Posts: 5709 (11/06/09 08:19 PM) Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	You might try this: Take the short tip section of a 3-piece cleaning-rod, put a .45-cal copper brush on it, chuck the other end in an electric-drill, then dip the brush in lacquer-thinner, slide it into the chamber and spin away, sliding the bursh in and out as it spins. Re-dip in the lacquer-thinner and repeat as many times as necessary. Copper is softer than steel, so you won't be enlarging or damaging the chamber. Stainless-steel brushes can actually wear away regular steel, so I would not use any steel brushes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand?
