Posts: 5389 (11/02/09 07:42 PM) Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None While I've got a descent stash of Hert, Port, SA and Spanish NATO ammo, I picked up another 500 rounds of DAG, Geman Nato ammo from Military Gun Supply today. Total cost, including the horrendous shipping, was .508 cents per round. It comes loose in a plastic storage box which I'll use for cat food or something and store the ammo in a proper ammo box. I know this is redundant, but remember when they could almost not give NATO stuff away? Gee I wish we could go back for just a day. I'm max out a credit card or something.....Oh wait! I actually did that! Whew! I did buy a bunch of good stuff over the years and now have it to feed my new AR in .308. It loves that stuff. I just put it out of my head that every full mag is $10! Some folks have been less than pleased with some of the recent (within the last year) 7.62 ammo that has been made available. $10 per mag. you make it sound so expensive to shoot now!!

AIM has some South African stuff for a few bucks more. I own that, too, and have been pleased with it. I just went with the German stuff because the cost was reasonable ( I won't say low!) for what is supposed to be good quality stuff. I can't remember which forum, but some folks were getting some rough looking ammo with rotted out brass. Hopefully, I'm wrong and my memory is slipping. Maybe it was even some of the Indian ammo of a few years ago. It seems like someone over at gunboards got a bad can or two of the German stuff recently (within the last year). Posts: 622 (11/05/09 01:11 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I picked up 1K of the 93 DAG last year to store for long term. There were a number of complaints of corrosion on the cases and decided to open up 1 and take a look. Not good. I ended up opening all of the battle packs and inspecting all 1K. I would say 35% had corrosion on them from minor to major. It did clean up easy enough with some steel wool but I had bought recent manufacture ammo to store. It all shot fine and was accurate but nasty looking. I still have about 500 rounds left, all of the corroded cases have been shot. There were also problems with the recent batch of Port that was available 6 - 9 months ago, same thing, corroded cases in sealed battlepacks. I also picked up some of the 88 MEN ammo and some 68 MEN as well. That ammo was fine. Rumor was that the paper the boxes were made of had some acid causing the corrosion on the 93 ammo. The port was caused by storage and termites, apparently they can chew through plastic. Ken

Posts: 3546 (11/07/09 08:21 PM) Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been in the process of moving my ammo out our house into our new garage where it has it's own room that's well insulated and heated. I had lost track of the ammo I had but now have it organized including about 8,000 rounds of .308. Unfortunately about 2,000 rounds are Cavim but the rest is South African, Portuguese, British, and German. I also found 500 rounds of Russian steel case dated 1969. I think the German stuff is MEN. It's in great condition but I've never used any. Carl

I wish I'd received the DAG stuff by Friday because I went to the range with my new .308 AR today. It should be here on Monday, however. I'm going to report on it. Posts: 623 (11/08/09 09:54 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I shot another 80 rounds of the 93 DAG on Friday, 100 yds. Accuracy was very good. I used steel wool to clean up the tarnished cases and it had no effect on accuracy. My disappointment was that I got 5 sealed battle packs and when I saw the condition of the ammo that was advertised as pristine I was pretty disappointed. It has proven to be very accurate for surplus ammo. I had planned on storing it. I have 7K+ left, German MEN, Port, Aussie and Hirtenberg. The DAG is on par with the Port for accuracy. Ken

Posts: 5394 (11/08/09 10:08 AM) Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The only time I ever found contamination in a spam can was when I opened up some Korean 30.06 way back when. When I opened packets, there were tiny bright blue dots all over the ammo, some of which had actually penetrated the walls. It most certainly ruined the ammo because for every 5 rounds I tried, three were "click-bangs" in the most traditional way imaginable. Turns out that when the Korean worker was packing up the ammo, he was sweating profusely and dripping all over the brass which was then sealed up and allowed to perculate. When I opened the box, this is what I saw: Closer inspection showed that there is definately tarnished brass, from the links, no doubt. But it had been tumbled and is bright and clean save for the spots. No bad cases at all. And another at random Don't let the camera angle or flash fool you. The case is perfectly smooth and won't cause any issues. I'm going to try some ASAP and will select a handful at random. I'll let you know how it peforms. Do I wish it was all bright and beautiful? Sure. But it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as some I've seen and won't require me to do anything to it. I'll range report soon. I had the chance to hit the range today (finally!) and shoot some of that DAG ammo. It was fine. Not bad in the accuracy department, either. I selected 20 rounds at random, loaded them up in mags and shot them through my new DPMS LR308 B "AR-10" Clone. It all went bang and ended up with I was pointing. I even used some to adjust the BUIS on the new rifle and it grouped just fine. I was also hitting a 12" gong at 100 yards off hand with iron sights. So, while it might not be target ammo, it's good enough to be accurate at that range. I don't have the ability to shoot over 100 yards locally but I will try it at a longer distance later in the month if the weather holds. Just thought I'd report in. From the standpoint of having somthing to shoot up, however, this DAG has worked just fine. I took it to the range again just the other day and ran through probably 100 rounds with nary an issue. And, to my surprise, it grouped extremely well. On the stand at 75 yards, we could group the shots (with the original trigger which is really creepy and gritty) at probably 2 to 2-1/2" for five shots. That's really amazing considering it's a light round (47 grain ?) compared to what my DPMS LR308 barrel would like (68 grain) with the 1/10 twist. Still, it's fun. My son and I shot some "bowling pin" type contests: him with my AR and me with the new rifle and we shot at plastic juice bottles, mine on the left and his on the right. After hitting the "pins" down first one to shoot the center bottle wins. I shot 5 times at one at 75 yards hanging off the branch of a bush and figured I'd hit it a couple times. When we went to check, I had 4 distinct holes and one skim" hit in that bottle whose lable was only 4 x 6 at 75 yards using the Aimpoint red-dot. I was very happy with those results. So, I'm going to order up another container, I think, since it's still available and just have it on hand for fun shooting. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! Posts: 607 (01/02/10 11:13 AM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been shooting DAG (Dynamit Nobel A-G, Troisdorf, Germany, (previously Geco and DNG Gustav Genchow, Karlsruhe) ammo from a sealed case for some time now. The slight amount of case corrosion seems to come from a reaction to the paper used to wrap the bundles. I have shot it through a Chilean M98, Fabrika FR7 and FR8, SAIGA and FAL with no negative issues whatsoever. One of the FR8s shot a 1" group at 50 meters from a rest after I adjusted the funky eccentric front sight.
