I know the Swiss issued grease to the troups to clean their weapons with, thought it was a little strange.but I was looking at a book The "
Parabellum" Automatic Pistol... Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken Berlin.and noticed in the cleaning section, and I will para-phrase,after the pistol
has been used,no time to clean, draw a greasy rag or cotton waste repeatedly from muzzle end thru the bore till clean. But if the weapon have seen hard wear,it
should be taken to pieces, cleaned, lubricated on all working surfaces (preferably with pure vaseline).but I guess the Swiss and the Germans knew what they were
doing, lots of their weapons still in great shape...jwr

It does make sense with field cleaning if one did not have the time to field strip their weapon. The grease would have prevented against rust but I have no
idea how clean it would be after using this method. With all the powder and carbon residue etc... But like you said they had to have known something to keep
their weapons in resonable shape. Just my thoughts.

Using a greasy rag won't clean all the residue out, but it does help to keep it soft so that when a proper cleaning is possible the crud comes off easily.
I use these methods when shooting black powder, if I'm going to shoot more the next day or later in the day I will wipe down and swab out the firearm with
greasy swabs and when I'm done with shooting do a proper cleaning. It's more effective than you think.

Hey, the Germans knew everything! (Except how to pick leaders and designing semi auto rifles).
