I don't see an acceptance mark on the side of this, like my 98/22 has. I assume it was polished off during a refurb. What can you tell me about it guys? Thanks a bunch, Millman

Posts: 51 (09/22/09 06:58 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks. The bore is quite good. I have seen some really rough Vz 24s, but fortunately, this is not one of them. I'm not sure about the bolt. It doesn't have the full serial # on the top of the bolt handle, but the rifle is d9344, and there is a small 4 stamped on the bottom of the bolt handle, near where it meets the bolt body. The stock SN and the receiver SN do match. I was told on another forum, that it was probably made in 1937-1938. Also that it probably was a Czech army rifle that was diverted and sent out in a export contract. This would explain the lack of a Czech acceptance mark. Who it was exported to is still a mystery. I had an all-matching Lion crested vz.24 rifle with matching bayonet/scabbard and correct sling; a collector's dream, but, it spat out bullets in a 6 inch pattern at 25 yards. I just could not bear to keep a rifle that was such a useless shooter. Hopefully, some day I'll come across an example like yours. Tim

Posts: 1427 (11/16/09 11:03 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I can tell you that is an incredibly fine looking rifle in a truly awesome piece of wood, and also tell you that it is very unlikely that any 8mm Mauser is going to shoot groups as tight as a Swede generally will, so that the group you are showing around the dime is likely fully acceptable!

I beg to differ! My two Yugo M24/47's shoot 1" groups pretty regular (unless I'm not on ). In fact, these are my first two milsurps and I was pretty amazed. I guess it helps that their barrels look like new and their triggers (after the travel) feel lighter than most new deer rifles. I guess I have a couple of the unlikely ones!

I don't think that's true of the 8x57. As always with any individual rifle, shooter, ammo combination, your mileage may vary!

But could that be because more Swede's are shot in competitions than 8mm? Maybe because of less recoil? I'm not nocking the Swedes. Anyway, as a rule of thumb I completely agree with you. Afterall, my deer rifle is 6.5x55 in a Ruger MkII and its very accurate.

Most competition shooters avoid excessive recoil, because it makes shooting high scores much more difficult over the course of many rounds fired. 6.5 cal also offers a greater variety of more accurate bullets to chose from, and is generally considered to offer a much more precise platform for working up very accurate loads. These factors, and others, combine to make it where lots of 6.5 Swedes have been shot in competition, while 8mm are at best very rare, and the literature I have available seems to bear this out. Competition shooters natural tend to favor anything that gives them more precision with less stress and fatigue. That being said, I also have an M48 that can shoot to one minute on a good day, but I have several other 8x57 rifles that can't hold three MOA with their best loads. I believe most all of my Swedes will hold within three, with almost anything I feed them. But that is not truly representative of anything, other than my guns with me shooting them! Be happy with the super accurate rifles you may have in any caliber, while they last, but don't dispair at the ones that only shoot to infantry levels of accuracy, which is minute of chest out to 500m and minute of jeep out past that!

Even my hunting rifle, with scope, has a hard time getting that kind of group, and that is the reason for a new commercial barrel in 8mm is on order right now. I like the caliber. Kevin in Or.
