Re-barrel a 1911? |
Lead | |
|
I was given a 1911 that had been improperly stored and the bore had rusted. I cleaned it up and got it looking pretty good but the damage to the bore
limits accuracy to around 3" to 4" with iron sights at 100 yards. Is it practical to rebarrel this rifle or would it be cheaper just to buy another
one? I really like the 1911 and prefer the longer sight radius over the carbine.
Thanks, ES |

I have one with muzzle wear, so I had to explore this topic as well, There is one gunsmith that re-barrels K31's ( you'll have to google that ), I
contacted him to ask. His reply was that, unlike a K31, it is very easy, about like re-barreling a Winchester 94. I did not explore further, I decided to
re-crown and counterbore instead.

If I have to go that rout, could I not have a more coventional chamber cut in the new barrel also? I'm thinking .308?

I think I would leave it as is, unless you are really in love with the rifle. Rebarreling would cost you close to what its worth and lose some collectabilty
value. Doing it in .308 would give it "Bubba" status & make it worth even less.
You could cut you losses and sell it off to someone with the accuaracy issue mentioned. Many surp shooters can't do better than 3-4" on a good day anyway. It's your rifle though, do as you see fit. |

If you can pull 3-4 inch groups with it, is it worth a few hundred bucks more to pull 2-3" groups....which is about as good as 95% of the people can do
with as issued sights? I don't think so....and as pointed out by others, it lowers its collectability. As to changing cartridges, that is more than a
simple rebarrel, new chamber. The odds are good that you'll need bolt work as well to ensure reliable extraction of the new narrower headed cartridge. If
you want a minty bore, you'd be money, time and energy ahead to sell what you have and buy one that meets your needs.....and you'd have a lot more
collectable rifle as well. In the words of the great prophet, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
