I finally was able to pull everything together for a shooting session. As it
happened, it was my first high powered shooting this year. We have been remodeling most of the summer and aren't quite done yet so frankly, I've done
little of any kind of shooting. Some .22, sks & pistol is about it. I've been intending to get some milsurp shooting in the last several Sundays,
especially as I have gotten a number of new pieces this past year, but weather, circumstances, et al have so far prevented it. Well I finally did it. At that
it ran late and I was only able to get in one box of ammo with my new Finn Mosin M39. The shooting session loosened up some crud in the bore so it actually
looks as good as the seller said it was.
I fear there's a good bit
of copper build up and I have more cleaning to go.
The rifle (the bayo is a repro)...
Me. As I said, not the greatest of pics but representative at least, and yes, the walker is mine. I have got to get a spotting scope...
The (sigghhh) target (I used to shoot groups)...
The distance is right about 75yds, the max I can get out of my back yard. The target also illustrates why I usually don't post targets. Ill health, many meds, shaky hands and cataracts, worse in my right eye naturally, mean I don't shoot anywhere near as well as I once did. Still and all, accuracy for it's own sake has never been an object of my shooting. I will continue to use ever more blurry iron sights and be content with the best I can do. The shooting itself is my satisfaction.
But the target indicates the sights are well adjusted as they are. I had to change nothing. They are centered well enough and for 150m setting at 75yds, the height above poa is just about right I'd say. The shots moving into the red was a product of my adjusting my poa to bring them in. All in all it's pretty obvious to me that in steadier hands, the old M39 would do right well. But y'all have a long wait (I hope!) before this rifle passes from my hands. It's definitely a keeper. I reckon to try the M28 next. And a Mauser. I am after all foremost a mauser man so reckon I had better shoot one.
Yes?
