13 year old's first deer. |

Took my Girlfriends son hunting this afternoon and he scored. I had fixed up a Brazilian 7x57 carbine for him back in the summer and he had practiced with some
cast bullet reloads till he could hit gallon milk jugs filled with water placed at 100 yards. He didn't know what I was doing but I had asked him about the
rifle stuff like did he like it, did he think it would take a deer etc. He was always really hyped up about it so I gave it to him for his 13th birthday which
was Nov. 2. So, on the last evening of youth days season here he got three shots, all offhand, at a deer that was about 65 yards away. The last shot connected
and broke it's spine. Might have been a bit underpowered but we will worry about it later, he was shooting 150 grain Lyman cast bullets backed by 20 grains
of IMR-4227. He loaded the ammo himself with me watching. Not a hot load but it took the deer and it doesn't leave him beat senseless. He is just 13 and
will grow into full power stuff. He's on cloud 9 and I'm really proud of him. Muzzleloader season starts tomorrow and we don't have any more
freezer space.

Sounds like he has a good mentor. My dad did the same for me, loading, practicing, etc. except it was with a modern firearm. Dad's not in to "those
ugly military guns", he'd rather build a "pretty gun" with them. Anyway, tell him good job! I'm hoping to do the same this weekend,
can't wait!

Two miss's and a spine hit at 65 yards .........I venture to say hes hitting high.
Get him to lower his aim to low chest at that short of range. I bet the rear sight is set for 150. My M-39 its 2 inches higher at 50 yards than 150. Show him to hold low when hes that close with a chest shot. A most excellent start, and it'll only get better with time, practise and experiance You can look at him as a young Man now. 7mm is a great Caribou round, so I think Deer too. Great way to treat a kid, for sure.

Congrats for introducing the young feller into a great way of life.
To post pictures you have to use the "Add Reply" feature when you reply not "Post Quick Response". You can add pictures when you compose the original post as well. You can also use the "edit" feature and add pictures. You should see the toolbar below the title box. Find the icon that looks like a mountain. You can use this to upload pictures directly from your PC's picture storage area. A lot of people use "Photobucket" which is a remote site where you store pictures. This is activated by clicking on the circle in a square icon between the mountain and the smiley face.

Here's a decent picture. Small deer yes but it might as well have been a charging elephant to him.
