Lord forgive me if this should be obvious, but what's the advantage of this caliber over 5.56 NATO?

Doc, I hope you are not going to need divine forgiveness on that, as I had the same question.
All I can figure is that they have large stockpiles of that ammo, that they obtained while it was super cheap. Otherwise ... ??? |

Duh
best price on 5-56 211K best price on 5.45 120 per 1020 556 55 grain regular bullet/ 5-45 cool trick penetrator stuff 1/2 price, more fun playing 'bounce the beverage can' what's not to like? Seriously, I poo-poo'd the 5.45 until I got one. Terminal ballistics of the russian trick bullets impressed me. Shooting is fun, but I keep passing up the Gahil & AR's to play with the Tantal. Like my Norinko AK, it has fired thousands of rounds without fail. |

Cost is the main factor. 5.45 is just WAY cheaper than 5.56.

Cost of ammo mostly, even the commercial Silver Bear in 30 round boxes is cheaper than 5.56x45 right now.
I wouldn't shoot corrosive through the gas system of the AR unless I was down to the last few hundred rounds and my AK in that caliber stopped working and the zombies were boarding the ship.

I haven't noticed any problems.........then again, I have THE BEST cleaning method by far!
Smokepole50 and I were discussing corrosive in the AR.....bore, bolt head, inside of carrier are all chromed. Chamber is chromed. Gas tube is stainless steel and easily replaceable. Receiver is aluminum. There really isn't much to rust! Besides, I have the aforementioned (and much discussed) super-thorough and awesome cleaning method that I'll happily detail to anyone.

OK, did not realize the cost advantage. Has anyone done the math to see how many rounds one would have to shoot to break even on the cost of the investment in
the uppers?

4,987 rounds.......

The 5.45 is an awesome, nasty performing round, but I can't see putting forward the cash for an AR upper. After what corrosive did to my AK74 I cringe at
the though of it in an AR.

I'm committed to non-corrosive only in the AR-upper. It isn't as cheap as the surplus stuff, but even the Silver Bear is cheaper than 5.56x45.

Chuck,
Your aversion to skydiving is strange enough..........this fear of corrosive in a gun bulit largely of parts that don't rust is downright gay.

Greg, what's with the gay thing?

I'm sure he's only making reference to the original dictionary definitions, and not the modern pc usage.

Oh....far out man!
Like the first and second verses of the unsanitized, original My Old Kentucky Home? I tried to find the link to the posting at AR15.com of someone's S&W 5.45 that had used surplus in it and all of the rot blooms and actual rust that had formed in the chamber area, bolt, bolt face and trigger/springs area of the rifle. No luck with it so far, but it was posted a little over a year ago.

Chuck,
I'd like to see something on that too (the rust blooms)! I know chroming can flake but I'd also like to know.....did the guy practice the "Greg Treatment of Dual Body/Upper Cleansing?" (I do honestly feel the shower treatment is about as effective as it gets). I bought my CVA muzzleloader in 1994 and have shot it fairly extensively, even practicing with it all day shot after shot. Then I cleaned the barrel and nipple with hot soapy water, removed the cleanout screw, and did it all over again. I then kept the barrel soaked in Rem oil in a plastic bag. I later switched to TC "bore butter" and STILL I have a rust free firearm with a cleanout screw that comes right out. A friend's cleanout screw rusted and bonded to the barrel of his rifle......he didn't clean as extreme as me. hsc |

From what I remember of the post, he didn't clean it until a few days after shooting, and it was horrible looking.
He did some after cleaning pictures and some of the parts were pitted looking. That was some fast acting corrosion. Oil is a bad thing for muzzle loaders in regard to the nipple and chamber area. I've never had rust on anything here due to poor cleaning or negligence. I did have a Yugo SKS start rusting from the time it took to get from the range to the house at one of the 1st WVBOR shoots several years ago. Hasn't happened since either, I learned to clean at the range, then wipe everything down really good when they get to the house before getting put back into lockdown.
