I'd post pics but I can't figure out how as my photo album won't open up when I click the "Insert Image" button.

My Yugo M98/48 has an extra recoil lug! |
Lead | |

I just traded for a Yugo M98/48 (ex-K98k) and it has an extra recoil lug behind the action above the rear of the trigger guard (not in the wrist like a VZ24
sling swivel hole). The stock is slightly cracked ahead of the normal recoil lug. Could this be an item added at rebuild time to retain the stock even though
it is cracked? Is it rare?

There have been a few of those posted in the past, but they aren't very common.
Some speculate that the extra lug is added to prevent a potential split and others to stop a split from getting worse. More than a handful of Mosin Nagant rifles have this feature too.

That's exactly what I thought. Funny I didn't notice it when I was inspecting it. I guess it reinforces the "rebuilt" aspect. I love it!

Weren't rifles with an extra recoil lug in that spot used to grenade launching or something like that whilst in German service?

I'm not aware in my research that that was the case, but I could be wrong. Never have seen a K98k that didn't pass through a Yugo refurb facility that
had one. That's why I was initially surprised when I saw it. The fact the Yugos were trying to save their resources and cut wastage whilst rebuilding
rifles makes good sense. I imagine the Germans had a plentiful supply of stocks to repair rifles with. Also my theory about grenade launching is that if you
had to have a rifle with an extra recoil lug to launch rifle grenades then that would highly limit the amount of troops with grenade launching capability.
Again, I could be wrong!

Hi, saw your post. I just obtained one of these stocks, which is stamped with three serial numbers (both sides of stock - evidently it had been around!)
It appears to have once been a German laminated stock which was rebuilt at 1 TRZ (R side near buttplate). The pin holes in the wrist recoil lug appear to be larger than the standard recoil lug. I would like to remove both so that I can refinish and strip the grime. Anyone have a tool..or helpful suggestion? regards OODA |

xtra lug | ||

Well I cant seem to get my pics to work here but for a hand made tool for the cross bolt I bought an inexspensive pair of needle nose pliers..The kind that
turn down 90 degrees..I then used my grinder ( a file would work pretty quick as well) to shape each point until it was a nice fit in the two holes..they work
on lugs with holes or slots..price less than $5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- The xtra lug is mostly seen on K98 refurbs but I have recently seen 2 diff M24/47 rifles with this as well.. either I never noticed before or these are very uncommon over here...I dont know which is more true but based on the fact that the majority of these I've seen dont show any exterior sighns of cracking the Grenade theory is my favorite at this time..Perhaps both theories are true as the crack could have been seen starting inside the stock during refurb... |

Sadly, I don't have a grinder, or anything close to a garage or a shop these days...I dribbled candle wax over the lug to seal it and hoped for the best.

Honestly, I don't recommend removing the lugs unless you absolutely have to. I have had issues with them coming loose after removing and reinstalling them.
Just clean around it as best you can. Now, as to purpose, you see these lugs a lot on laminate stocks and not quite as much on solid stocks. The ones I have
seen on solid stocks are to repair cracks behind the receiver tang and keep it from splitting out. The laminate stocks is not uncommon to see that repair, it
was done to fight delamination. That bolt helps keep the layers together.
