Broken heads Mauser capture screws |
Lead | |

Anybody got a decent method for removing capture screws with broken off heads? I can't seem to get a grasp on removing a screw body that small without
damaging the female threads.

I'd start with a good soaking with Kroil, then use 1/16" or 5/64" LEFT-HANDED drill-bit, in a reversible drill. Use a point-punch to
make your starting depression.
Link: http://www.mytoolstore.com/hanson/hanson.html There's a good chance that the act of drilling left-handed will remove the screw. If it doesn't, then use a small EZ-out. Link: http://www.mytoolstore.com/hanson/extractr.html

Thanks, Beano. Especially for the links to the tools.
I think I'll try one of those (used to be) big-headed/small shafted screws on the rear sight of an old 1903 Turkish Mauser first and see how things progress from there. I have about a half dozen broken screw issues scattered throughout my collection that I need to address. First, I have to get my boat over the accident site and retrieve them from Davey Jones' locker. Dave

Craftsman also makes a lil screw remover set that works well if the heads are stripped out or if broken off, you must drill a small hole or indention into the
screw shaft. The lil tools are made to be spun backwards (to remove the screw) and cut on the end to bite in as you turn them. Best used in reversable drill
and spin slow to moderate speed.

Thanks, Bob.
I didn't see the size of the bits listed. We're talking about something around 1/8" here. Does it work in something that small? Dave
