Very clean looking rifle, top of receiver has S/147/G and top of the 147 was a Russian X. It looked like a small cursive S underneath the serial number on the receiver on the right side of the barrell was stamped BW28829, and on the left side of receiver/barrell it did not have the eagle/swastika but eagle w/ turned down wings? Asking price $499, missed the boat for purchasing a K98 the past few years and would like one but feel this may be too high. Any suggestions on value? Really would like to know what the S/147/G stands for ?

Posts: 912 (11/21/09 08:14 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Made in 1935 by J.P. Sauer & Son. I just got a Yugo rework marked S/147, with 1940 under that. I paid $250 for it along with three hundred rounds of 8x57 ammo. I think the barrel is a new replacement by the Yugo's. I feel the price you quote is quite high for a Russian rework. There is a sticky in this forum that will let you know all the codes. Kevin in Or.

Posts: 41 (11/24/09 09:54 AM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Those are earlier Third Reich proofs, used before the eagle w/swastika proof. I'm not sure when the change over was, but it was a gradual change, occuring over 2 or 3 years. Probably 1937 to 1939 or so.
