A "real" semi-auto consists of a wooden stock, blued steel, and rifle caliber.....no poodle shooters need apply! LOL Enjoy! hsc Sorry guys! I actually did leave out the SKS and M14 by mistake.............didn't mean to. So which of these is your favorite? While I've shot revolvers in .30 Carbine, I can't say I've shot (or heard of) any handgun outside of an AK pistol in 7.62x39.

The .30 Carbine, which HSC implies is more of a rifle caliber than the 7.62x39, is a relatively common handgun chambering as well. The 7.62x39 is not. Therefore, wouldn't that add to its "real rifle cartridge" value?

Posts: 6725 (11/23/09 03:11 PM) Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm fairly qualified to answer this one; I own at least one example of each of the listed choices on the poll, except for the G41(but I have shot one)! I picked the M1 Garand as my favorite. It's accurate, rugged, reliable, has good sights, and would "work" even if called on today as a go-to gun. Of the others- AG42b-accurate, somewhat reliable, but I don't 100% trust the operating system to be "rugged* SVT40- can be finicky with ammo. Feels like it's less rugged than it is. G43-more of an "investment" than a go to shooter. Parts are expensive to replace, and it can literally beat itself to death through use. G41-see above 5x FN49-a close finisher to the Garand, hampered only by the awkward gas adjustment system, later fixed in the FAL. MAS 49-49/56- It's a really nice gun. It's stout, accurate, and reliable. If the ammo weren't so scarce....it would be a real winner. What were the other choices? The poll goes away after you vote... Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up...

Posts: 3835 (11/23/09 05:24 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Having owned or shot all the ones listed the most trouble free, easiest to clean, and just genuine fun to shoot is the M1 Carbine hands down to me. I tried one about 5 or 6 years ago and now I own quite a few and even the dreaded Universal post war version too. Believe it or not it is the most fun to shoot and the most accurate (micro-groove rifling which the armed services turned down as not being rugged enough) of all the ones I have and shoot. Ammo is getting expensive but then look what some of the ammo for others mentioned is costing these days. Just a fun loving little carbine with little or no trouble and not scary to a new shooter to boot. The best to me! Bill

Only our US legal versions are limited to semi-auto only. I do have an interest in learning about others, and would like something mid-range that is lighter and handier, for getting out of situations that are perhaps a little tighter and closer in, than what the Garand's forte calls for. But I'm certainly not feeling like the Garand is a poor choice in almost any senario.

Posts: 4155 (11/24/09 01:04 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I voted for the FN-49, but I knew that the Garand would be the overwhelming favorite. I picked the FN because it holds two more rounds in the magazine and is not dependent upon using enbloc clips. I do think that the Garand handles better than the FN49. I concur with the other posters that faulted the other selections as being too undependable in combat or having serious design flaws (the G41s and G/K43s for example). I also agree that the M1 carbine doesn't belong in this poll. It shoots a glorified pistol round and it's original operational niche in the WWII American armory was as a substitute for the M1911 pistol, certainly not as a semi-auto "battle rifle". I interpret battle rifle to mean a basic infantry weapon that fires a full power cartridge...30-06, 7.62NATO, 7x57 and 7.92x57 Mauser, 7.62x54R, etc, NOT an intermediate power/length cartridge like the the 7.62x39.
