I apologize guys, I haven't done such a good job on this poll. The SKS, M14, and PSL were left off and the M1 Carbine shouldn't be on there...but
it's just so cute!
I had a bit of a collision with an airplane last sunday and am a bit sore.....I'll blame it one that.

You tell the guys in Nam that I walked with something bad about the M2 version of the M1 carbine and they would really put up a fight as they liked it a lot. Tell half the guys that carried one any amount of time versus the miraculous Garand and I am sure they tolerated the M1 Carbine much more than the heavier Garand especially all the support personel that carried them in WW2. I am sorry it pulled it's weight in war and I think it should be in there. Bill |

I voted for the M1 carbine, but for the life of me, I don't know why. I guess because it is cute?

I interpret battle rifle to mean a basic infantry weapon that fires a full power cartridge...30-06, 7.62NATO, 7x57 and 7.92x57 Mauser, 7.62x54R, etc, NOT an intermediate power/length cartridge like the the 7.62x39.This is were we run into the semantics battle. While some think that a "Battle Rifle" should fire a full power, center fire cartridge of a medium caliber, in all actuality, a "Battle rifle" is whatever anyone carries into battle. Today all countries issue and carry an intermediate power rifle, either 5.56 or 7.62x39, there are no other calibers being used that I know of. Hence a rifle of either caliber is a "Battle Rifle." Now, HSC did say "semi-auto," so that basically limits us to pre-WW II, and just after as the select fire rifle became the weapon of choice for the major powers and anyone else that could afford to re-equip their military with such a weapon. So, of the rifles he listed, he included the M-1 carbine and excluded the SKS. The M-1 carbine should have been included as regardless of the horror stories we've all heard, there are countless graves inhabited by someone who thought different. And the SKS should have been included as it was a major advancement, a sufficient caliber, and (though short lived) widely distributed in several major militaries. Of my choices, they are all great rifles, combat tested, and proven to be reliable in every condition ever thought of by some poor schumck having to "battle" some other poor schmuck. There, that makes 4 cents. eb

The one thing that is being (almost) universally missed here is the
world "favorite."
This poll isn't about reliability, knockdown power, caliber commonality or anything else. It's just what one's favorite semi-auto is. As I said above, I did make a mistake in leaving several rifles off...when I went back to correct it, I found I couldn't. For me, my favorite semi-auto is my Ljungman. It's NOT the most reliable, it's not cute, it's not lightweight, and the ammo isn't as common as .308 or 30-06. But it is my favorite: it has blued steel, it has a wooden stock, it's very accurate, it has a great trigger, it's smooth, it doesn't kick much. It's neat because it's fairly rare and most people ask what it is. hsc Skydiving accident: didn't go out far enough on the strut and brushed the landing gear with my left arm....other jumpers said they heard a "thunk" when I let go but I honestly didn't believe them! I didn't feel any pain until some 7 hours later! I've bumped my elbow worse than that on a door. No bruise either. Collison speed would have been very low. Did lose the left shoulder-mounted radio in the impact....saw it above my head and I thought "what is THAT? What just fell off my parachute??" Next jump I got a bit too far out on the strut and had an unstable let go due to swinging when I "jumped" off the landing gear step. I was falling unstable and nosing over into a dive. I am pretty sure I rotated 270 degrees before I "got my arch back on" and stabilized the fall. It's actually easier than I thought it would be! However, I may have wrenched my right shoulder letting go in a swing but I think that pain is mainly due to the harness being too big for me as it was hurting after the first jump. I hate that Navigator 280 rig! I did though do two 5,500' freefalls (solo) opening the parachute myself and landing totally without radio assistance (could never hear what they say anyway)! Supposed to go
higher next time.....you guys sure you don't want to try this? Am I the only Parallaxer that watches Nitro Circus???

HSC, Dude, in order to make my favorite list it HAS to HAVE "reliability, knockdown power." eb

To be a "favorite", it had better be accurate, reliable, rugged, and be nice to look at.
As stated, the Garand does all that. It goes to the range with me more than all the others by a large margin. Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up... |

I have to point out again, that the M14 does NOT qualify, since it was originally designed as a select-fire (not "true" or "real" semi-auto) weapon. The SKS in my opinion, DOES qualify as it was originally designed as a semi-auto-only weapon. The M1-Carbine DOES qualify, as it was originally designed as a semi-auto-only weapon, even though it was later modified into the M2, which was a select-fire weapon. Jest my two-cents... -Bean (between you, me, and the fencepost, I voted for the Garand as well!)

The M1-Carbine DOES qualify, as it was originally designed as a semi-auto-only weapon, even though it was later modified into the M2, which was a select-fire weaponActually Bean, as originally designed, the M1 carbine WAS a select fire weapon. This feature was dropped at the behest of Army Brass as it was "wastefull" of ammunition. It was later brought back as a "desireable feature" after the troops started "illegally modifying" the carbine for field use. Why fight the flow? Personally I really like the carbine, a lot, got two. A CMP arsenal re-build Inland, and an IAI carbine in 5.7 MMJ. Though I haven't seen the IAI yet (bought it while over here) it's sure to become a favorite, but not one of my very favorite. Which to be; a "favorite", it had better be accurate, reliable, rugged, and be nice to look at. The Garand, well it's a Garand, what else can be said. The MAS 49/56 is just too funky looking and too swell a rifle not to like. Other than the caliber it has NO faults. The FN 49 the same. My only gripe about the FN is the fixed magazine. Other than that it is one of the best rifles ever NOT designed by John Browning. My biggest problem is I like all of 'em, so when selecting a "favorite" I gotta go with what I know. Accurate, rugged, reliable, power, and "purdy." Which can be substituted by "funky."

Wow, Pit, you've got a spitfire! I've never even seen one, but it was one of many in the catalouge section of the 1972 Gun Digest I started my gun
drooling career over. I could afford it, but ammo supply was problematic. I was casting my own bullets, pan lubing, & loading with a Lee loader at the
time. Couldn't afford a scale.Wound up with an Enforcer instead.

Skydiving isn't practical?
1). No girls texting while driving can touch you. 2). An "out-of-body" experience had any other way will likely cost more than $65.00 and risk jail time. 3). Closest thing to having wings (yet)...and we haven't even gotten to jumping in a wing suite. 4). When all (and I do mean ALL) your friends (and 99% of everyone else) tell you that you're crazy (or stupid, suicidal, etc.) you get the pleasure of knowing they really want to do it, but are just too scared to try and too proud to admit it.

Since the M14 doesn't qualify I must vote M1 Garand........but I'd put a "write in" vote for the M1A if allowed.....
