M-39 Strikes again |

Got my second deer of the season with my tikka 1942 M-39. 43.6 grains of VVN-140 and a sierra 200 grain BTSP. This one was a button buck at about 100 yards,
facing me more or less directly. The bullet hit him in right chest, taking out part of the shoulder, all of one lung, and 1/2 of his liver before heading to
parts unknown. He jumped, but only went about 30 yards. I love this rifle.

It's amazing that with that much damage he went anywhere! Carl

Yeah, I thought it was a bad shot at first. He basically bled out through his mouth very quickly while running. It was pretty gross.

That is an effective load, but the big variables are the individual animal, its nervous system, and adrenalin. It is very true that something can "be dead
and not know it". Animals can run 100 yards after taking a mortal wound or kick 20 minutes after they quit breathing and their throat has been cut. Your
rifle and your load did the job. Many of us have hunted successfully with our milsurps. They still work!

I based the load off the VV load fo the D166, but it was a bit slow with the sierra. Might be because of the slight difference in diameter of the projectile. I
bumped up the powder 1.6 grains and it brought the point of impact to dead center with the sierra at 150 meters. Have to love the front sight adjustment on the
M-39. A very well thought out rifle. I would think that with the with the velocity being so low for these sights it would not be impossible to come up with a
200 grain cast gas check round that would come close to working with the sights out to a few hundred meters. Maybe I will work on that project this winter.
