I'm a small-time, low-budget collector. 3 various Mausers, 1 Enfield, and 1 Garand is my whole collection of center fire rifles. I reload for them. I'm looking into buying an M39 for several reasons:
1. I want something I can shoot a lot. 7.62X54R is available cheaper than any other surplus rifle ammo, even cheaper than reloading for the above rifles.
2. I like the history of the Finn rifles rather than a Soviet one, and I hear they are quite accurate. Also other improvements from the 91/30.
3. Soviet 91/30's just don't do much for me and the various carbines kick too much to enjoy shooting a lot (which defeats the purpose of #1).
I see various M39's advertised with "dark bore but solid rifling" or "mostly shiny bore" for about $200. What can I really expect from these? Are they good to shoot a lot, and expect maybe 2" to 2.5" groups at 100 yards off a sandbag with the open sights? Dinged-up stock with a repairable crack and thin bluing are ok. I want a solid action and a VG bore with lots of life left.
For about $300 I see rifles with "excellent bores" and very nice external finish on the wood and metal. Are these likely to be arsenal refurbs or Bubba refurbs?
For you multiple-Mosin owners, are Soviet 91/30's just as accurate with surplus ammo as M39's, for a $100 rifle?
Any advice or pointing out of my misconceptions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Crunch

Some of the old beat stocks were belt sanded down smooth and look nice again
too.
As an aside I bought a K-31
before the mass importation and paid around $260 for it. I wondered if the prices would ever get that high again and they appear to have though at this point
with somewhat less valuable dollars than ten years ago.
