Original Turk 1903 with matching numbered bayonet |
Lead | |
|
The BBT just came and left an early Christmas present for me -- an original, not re-finished, matching 1903 Turkish mauser! With the matching bayonet no less!
I couldn't be happier. I've just been comparing it to my older 1903 (matching, but re-arsenalled) and was amazed at how these things looked when
new...because the one that came today is in excellent condition. From what I can tell, this rifle is from the smaller quantity produced in 1910 and marked in
non-Arabic. The only Turkish stamps are small crescents on some screws and barrel bands. I'll follow up with pics later.

You had better post some pictures!
Congratulations, very nice score. I didn't even know there were any in original configuration, and in excellent condition no less, still out there!!! |

Yes, it is still in 7.65. I am extraordinarily thankful for finding this one. I've not seen its like before. It sort of restored my hope that I can still
find interesting things out there now that I have most of the 'easy' to find mausers available here in the USA.
I need to remember how to post pics on this site. In the meantime, I put a few up over on GunBoards in their military mauser forum. (If this is impolite to cross post, please edit/delete.) |

Hey Beanstrung - thank you for the post on posting pics. Let's give this a try...

If and when you pull the stock off you'll probably find turkish inspection marks under the barrel and receiver. That's assuming the turks sent
inspectors to mauser for that buy. Lovely and rare rifle!

In original 7.65 that is absolutely flabbergasting!

Thank you for the nice words. I've not had it out of the stock yet. It's not a mint rifle, but still, I'd hate to make it any worse if I marred
something during disassembly.
The top band retainer doesn't depress all that far. The rifle is missing the cleaning rod, so that is not causing any issues. What's the secret to removing that band (the one w/ the bayo lug on it)? Comparing this rifle to a re-worked 1903 shows nearly all parts are the same except for the lower band. The new rifle (the 1910 Obie) has a lower band that is marked with a crecent, but does not have a screw holding the sling swivel, like the reworked rifle. |

My favorite technique is to use a thin wedge of hardwood (delrin also works well) to drift under the band along the face of the spring. A piece of wax paper on
top of the spring will help prevent any chance of maring the surface, though the wood alone usually does just fine.

John Wall posted some thoughts on this rifle and a small number of others like it over on Gunboards that call into question it being part of the 1910 batch of
additional mausers purchased by Turkey. His research suggests this may not be Turkish. Certainly his observation that the bayonet's date translates into
1907 and is therefore before the date of the rifle (1910).
I agree with his logic but still love the rifle...it's matching, in excellent shape and very uncommon. Works for me! Regards all, Chris |
