I didn't know that. I've read a bunch about Joe though.

This is the source I got it from, I cannot vouch for it's accuracy.

http://mtmen.org/mtman/html/jmeek/ Says he had an older brother Stephen Meek. Related to James Polk the prez. The River of the West is a good book Another is "Joe Meek the Merry Mountain Man" |

PB, the first reference that you give seems to have some problems with geography. It's kind of difficult to go down the Missouri River to St. Louis from
the Cumberland Gap. Perhaps the Ohio River is what was intended!
Other good reference books, that are just plain good reads include: A life Wild and Perilous; Utley Westering Man; Gilbert Rocky Mountain Rendezvous; Gowens and all feature Joe Meek as a main player in the historical drama of the era. Perhaps the best first person account I've read is: Narrative of the Adventures of Zenas Leonard; Written by Himself He entered the trade as a clerk a year after Meek came west, and while I don't recall if Meek is specifically mentioned in the book, I do recall that it seems the most unsensationalized (but still plenty wild) account of what the Rocky Mtn. Fur Trade must have really been like! He was with the transcontinental Walker Party that made it to Monterey and the Frisco bay, and spent several years "in the mountains" so he definitely saw and heard many first hand accounts of real adventures. GREAT STUFF!!! |

Sounds like you've read many of the same books I have. I like the book by Ruxton for narrative in the way they must have talked.

Yep, that one do shine, even though it is sort of a novel it is perfectly placed in the reality of the historical setting, or so I reckon!
