Need help w/ SKS |

I came across a SKS at a in door yard sale yesterday and took it with me for $180.00. I think it is one of the cheap ones but at any rate it is in mint
condition. It is mill with screwed in barrel, on the side of the reciver is the serial number--1207830C SKS762x39 NORINCO CHINA POLY USA ALT. GA.
Can any of you tell me when this was made? It has all matching numbers every where, has the bayonet on it along with the cleaning rod. Rear sling swivel is on
bottom of the stock not on the side. Like I said, it is in mint condition, took me a long time to get the heavy, heavy cosmo. off this gun and it still is not
all off of it yet. Please help!!! Thanks noodlenut08

She was made by Polytech in China.
Chinese SKS rifles are pretty high quality and usually great shooters. It sounds like yours is brand new. In used condition, $250 is a pretty average price any more and with yours likely being new and unfired, $250 would have been a really good deal, IMO. For $180, I'd say you got a spectacular deal on a rifle that should give you years of trouble-free service and provide you with many hours of entertainment! You did VERY well! Congradulations! |

Run of the mill, stamped, non-screw barrels, with some obvious use are priced at $350 at the Des Moines gun show today. As they say, you done good!

A dozen years ago, $180 was about the top end of the price range for Chinese SKS rifles. I never owned a Chinese rifle, as I was satisfied with my Russian
Tulas that I had at the time. But a lot of my shooting friends had Chinese SKS rifles and most of them were modified to accept larger capacity removable
magazines that never worked properly. To this day, I have yet to see any SKS rifle of any nationality work like they should when one of those aftermarket
magazines are used with them. So what you got was a rifle at less than half the going price on them nowadays, which means you did GOOD!

I often read posts of you guys finding guns at yard sales. I guess I'm gonna have to get in line with the old women around here cruisin the garage sales (what we call em in these parts). Guns and garage sales don't go hand in hand when I think of it, but the proof is hard to refute. There must be a connection!

I have 2 chi-com sks's that came with detachable mags. The 30 rounders never did work right.( feeding problems)
But the 20 rounders work without any problems at all. All of these are the USA brand steel mags. btw, both rifles also came with the original mags.

Do the "M" and "D" models, factory made to accept the AK mags work well?

"Do the "M" and "D" models, factory made to accept the AK mags work well?"
I don't own one, but I've shot one of the later "M" models with thumbhole stocks. It worked quite well with the 30-round mag. The mags, when inserted, tend to rattle a little, but nothing to actually worry about or hurt functioning. However, as a rule, they do NOT accept the 75-round drums. The tower with the feed lips is too short to lock into the mag well. |

To get an M or D to accept a drum, you need to get an alternate stock to ruin by cutting off a lot of wood in the mag-well area in order to get the sides of
the drum to fit.
Stocks are cheap and plentiful, get as few, one to tinker with and one for the final run and leave the original stock alone if you are wanting to fit a drum mag to the M or D models.
