Posts: 18 (12/11/09 12:03 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I had to get one. I may have paid a little too much but she is all mine! 1941 Puolustuslaitos marked Sako M39. I am currently trying to get the cosmo out of the stock. The warm fire does wonders. I took her apart and the receiver was all gunked up with sand, grease and pine needles. The tang is a mystery to me. I do not know who manufactured the receiver or what date is on it. I took some pics of the tang to see if anyone knows what the mark means. I will take some final pics of her when she is all put back together. -UPDATE- Well It took a while to clean the M39 up it had some bad surface rust. I used a new product called "Barricade" and that stuff worked amazingly well in taking off the surface rust! It took the rust of with a little scrubbing and came out clean. This stuff is great! And it also guards the metal against moisture. This stuff is like snake oil for guns. Anyways, when I was scrubbing away I noticed a mark on the bolt head. It was marked [V.K.T.] I never new that the finns marked or maybe manufactured bolt parts. I have pics below of bolt head and the rifle all cleaned up. Is the [V.K.T.] mark on the bolt head common? Which it is I can't tell, sorry maybe the younger sharper eyed people will know. The overstamp long ago has made that a real fine mystery rifle! I have never seen the mark myself to memory not that that means anything. Be very careful removing anything from blue as it will flee the preparation too and while I understand your wanting to remove and stop active rust you don't want to remove any blue either. Major reason why I use only oil is just that! Bill

Posts: 5594 (12/15/09 12:35 PM) Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, rust (oxidation of the iron in steel) can still occur under oil or grease. It will not stop the chemical reaction - only retards it. Best way to eliminate rust is to remove it. Clean it away down to white metal. (I do NOT recommend "Naval Jelly"!) Total removal is not an option in some cases, so the best that may be done is to minimize it and keep it covered. Keep air and moisture from feeding it. Regards.

Deep, shiny bluing on an old combat arm just isn't right to me - likely is "refinished" or did nothing to earn its heritage. Good on ya! NRA Endowment member LECS #2

I merely said preparations can remove blue and to be careful in what you use. I agree active rust can continue making oxides and then I made a big mistake not telling you the oil I use for starters is Kroil Oil which will stop and with continued applications remove rust or oxidation. I have used it in industry and rifles for well over 30 years and indeed maybe 40 when I think on it. There is nothing that works better and does no damage to blue that I have found in 40 years of mechanical and lubrication work and I have tried many other products during that time as it was my job to find the best. I worked for Dupont and Mobil during that time and they suggested and sent me many different things to try but I found nothing better. I had Ca rte Blanche to buy anything I wanted to be used on the equipment we had and indeed new things that came in too. Oil I use next is Balistol which is basically 99% mineral oil and has little or no chance of hurting anything I have come into contact with over the years. I am not above using anything given to me or suggested over the years and the only thing I know that limits me there is I am very cheap and buy nothing that offends that nature. I know what these two products can do and how far they will go so I guess you might say I am stuck in my cheap rut with at least two products that work just fine. As a result I look little at snake oils of all varieties and types. I have run one oil in all my vehicles and race cars for over 45 years as I remember Castrol of the proper weight has served me well for many years. Yeah I have run just about any synthetic that was given me with passable results and indeed no lost engines in all that time with any oils on the road or on the track. Not many people can say that so I think I am on the right track would not you say? Did not mean to offend you but merely guide you in the direction where you will have no regrets later on. I actually thank you for your explanation. Your experience and knowledge of products run twice my age. Who am I to critique or be offended, when I am naive to expert advice. I have heard of Kroil, but can not locate it in any hardware store or gun shop. Where could I come up o this great stuff? I am learning as I go, which may bite me later but hey it is all in the experience that matters. Thank you to all for comments and advice. blano86 (finn fanatic)

It is an industry type of solvent and rust penetrant that I also use for a bore cleaner too. Kroil Oil has a list of other products too, some are good some are not so good. Like all companies that make and sell stuff today not all they have is the best product. You'll get the experience and our age difference has us at different times in our life you are learning and frankly I sort of stuck in a rut using what I have for many years. Not always a good situation either I am afraid. While my ways work you may learn others that work for you! Keep that open mind working that is a great thing and I hope you cherish it and appreciate the things it will bring you in life! Best Holiday Wishes! Bill
